[PHOTO] Edo State Council Retirees Protest Unpaid Arrears

Traffic was grounded for several hours at the city centre in Benin, the Edo State capital, on Monday, following a protest by local government retirees over alleged indifference in their pension verification and non-payment of their seven-month pension arrears...

Vehicular movement was brought to a halt on Airport Road, Sapele Road and other adjoining streets due to the protest.

The aggrieved pensioners, many of whom were retired teachers drawn from the Oredo Local Government Area, carried placards while some of them sat on the busy Ring Road.

The Assistant Secretary of Edo Local Government Pensioners Association, Man Enabulele, said they had been invited by the government for a screening, but were disappointed when no one was available to attend to them.

He said, “A few days back, a commissioner said we should go to our respective local government areas today (Monday) and have our screening.

“But there was nobody to attend to us. We even sent somebody to the government house, yet nobody came.”

A pensioner, Mr. Anthony Aimazemhen, appealed to the state governor to intervene to enable the retirees to celebrate the Yuletide.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Tom Uloko, declined comment.
