Pistorius cheated on me, says ex-girlfriend

An ex-girlfriend of Oscar Pistorius broke down in court today as she described how the athlete cheated on her with Reeva Steenkamp.

Court proceedings were halted after Samantha Taylor described her relationship with the defendant on day five of the trial.

Miss Taylor described occasions when Pistorius screamed at her “out of anger”.

She said that he nearly always kept a gun on him and once became very angry when police stopped a car he was travelling in.

Pistorius, who was allegedly passenger in the car, fired his gun out of the sunroof about 15 minutes after the vehicle was pulled over by police.

She said that after being stopped by the police, Pistorius was “very angry” but later joked about wanting to “shoot a robot” – a traffic light.

Miss Taylor said that after shooting the bullet through the sunroof, Pistorius laughed. The athlete wanted to “irritate the police”.

She said that she normally spent four nights a week at Pistorius’s home. He often used his mobile phone late at night and sometimes his iPad, Miss Taylor said.

Ms Taylor gave her evidence after radiologist Johan Stipp was questioned by defence lawyer Barry Roux at the trial in Pretoria.

Pistorius arrived at the court building shortly after 7am and is expected to hear more harrowing testimony from prosecution witnesses in the case.

Yesterday Mr Stipp described how Pistorius knelt at Reeva Steenkamp’s side and struggled in vain to help her breathe by holding two fingers in her clenched mouth.

Mr Stipp said he went to Pistorius’ home after hearing shots fired on the night Ms Steenkamp was killed and found “a lady lying on her back”.

“I also noticed a man kneeling on her side, on the left side. I remember the first thing he said when I got there was ‘I shot her, I thought she was an intruder. I shot her,’” Mr Stipp told the court.

He said he did not recognise Pistorius, and described how he tried in vain to resuscitate Ms Steenkamp.

“She had no pulse in her neck, she had no peripheral pulse, she had no breathing movements that she made,” he said.

“She was clenching down on Oscar’s fingers as he was trying to open her airway.

“I tried to do a jaw lift manoeuvre, to try to open the airway, but it was very difficult with the clenching down.

“All during that time, there wasn’t any signs of life that I could see.

“I opened her right eyelid. The pupil was fixed dilated, and the cornea was milky – in other words, it was already drying out.

“So to me it was obvious she was mortally wounded.

“I looked at the rest of her body and I noted she had a wound in her right thigh, also a wound in the right upper arm.

“During that time … Oscar was crying all the time. He prayed to God to ‘please let her live, she must not die’.

“He said at one stage while he was praying ‘he will dedicate his life and her life to God if she would just only live and not die that night’.”

He added that Pistorius looked “sincere”: “He was crying, there were tears on his face. He was actively trying to assist her.”

Sky’s Alex Crawford, who was in court, said Pistorius was openly sobbing as the evidence was given.

Earlier, Pistorius’ defence team said it would have been “impossible” for neighbours to hear screams on the night Ms Steenkamp died.

Lawyer Barry Roux said neighbour Charl Peter Johnson’s claim that he heard gunshots followed by a woman screaming was incorrect.

ICC finds DRC warlord, Katanga, guilty

The International Criminal Court has found Congo militia leader Germain Katanga guilty of war crimes but acquitted him of sexual offences.

He was accused of being behind the 2003 massacre of more than 200 villagers in the gold-rich Ituri province of north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

He becomes just the second person to be convicted by the court since it was set up in The Hague in 2002.

He would have been the first convicted of sexual crimes.

Katanga, who was transferred to The Hague by the Congolese authorities in 2007, had denied the charges.

The fighting in Ituri, which broke out in 1999 and continued until 2003, started as a struggle for control of land and resources.

But it escalated into inter-ethnic war, exacerbated by the presence of Uganda troops, that killed an estimated 50,000 people.

Katanga was convicted of being an accessory to an attack on Bogoro that took place on 24 February 2003.

ICC prosecutors at The Hague say the assault was designed to “wipe out” the entire strategically important village, which is close to the Ugandan border.

According to the prosecution, the attack happened in the early hours of the morning and some villagers were shot while they slept, while others were cut up with machetes to save bullets.

At the time Katanga was 24 years old and the alleged commander of the Patriotic Resistance Force of Ituri, which had the support of the Lendu ethnic group.

The prosecution say as the FRPI’s leader he was to blame for the atrocities committed by his fighters against the villagers from the Hema ethnic group.

It was also alleged that the women who survived the massacre were raped or kept as sex slaves.

Another person was charged by the ICC in connection with Bogoro attack.

But in December 2012 Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui was acquitted as judges found there was insufficient evidence to show that he was the commander of National Integrationist Front, which also took part in the raid.

The BBC’s Maud Jullien in DR Congo says Katanga was known to his men as “Simba”, meaning lion.

Those who knew him describe him as a discreet man but ruthless on the battlefield, she says.

After the end of the Ituri conflict, peace deals were signed and Katanga was given a position in the Congolese army.

But a year after joining the military he was imprisoned for bad behaviour and was still in prison when the ICC issued its arrest warrant for him.

His is one of the longest-running cases at the ICC.

In July 2012, Thomas Lubanga, a rival militia leader in Ituri, was sentenced to 14 years in jail by the ICC for recruiting and using child soldiers.

Crimea vote 'will not be recognised' -interim PM

Ukraine’s interim prime minister has warned the Crimean parliament “no-one in the civilised world” will recognise its referendum on joining Russia.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk and others in the Kiev government have called the vote “unconstitutional” and “illegitimate”.

But the referendum has the support of the Russian parliament.

The speaker of the upper house said if the Crimean people vote on 16 March to join Russia then they would “unquestionably back this choice”.

The decision by Crimean MPs to seek to join the Russian Federation comes amid international tensions over the presence of pro-Russian troops in the southern Ukrainian peninsula.

The Kremlin said, after a telephone conversation between President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama, that differences remained in their approach and assessment of the crisis.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Paralympic team has confirmed it will take part in the Sochi Winter Paralympics, which begins later.

The head of the team, Valeriy Sushkevich, said they would participate “so they remember us, remember Ukraine – a sovereign state, which sent its athletes here”.

But he said: “If something major happens, Ukraine will leave the Games immediately”.

Prime Minister Yatsenyuk said on Friday Ukraine was open to talks with Russia as long as it withdraws its troops and abides by international agreements.

In a warning to the “separatist and other traitors of the Ukrainian state”, he said: “Any decision of yours is deliberately unlawful and unconstitutional and no-one in the civilised world will recognise the decision of the so-called referendum of the so-called Crimean authorities”.

Malaysian opposition leader, Ibrahim, jailed for sodomy

A Malaysian court has sentenced opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to five years in jail after overturning his acquittal on sodomy charges.

Mr Anwar led the opposition to its strongest ever performance in the May 2013 general elections.

While homosexual acts are illegal in Muslim-majority Malaysia, very few people are ever prosecuted.

Mr Anwar has always maintained the charges were part of a political smear campaign.

The court decision will affect Mr Anwar’s plans to compete in a key by-election in the state of Selangor this month, reports say.

A victory for Mr Anwar would mean he could become Selangor’s chief minister – widely seen as a powerful post.

The court said Anwar could remain free on bail while he appeals against the verdict to the country’s highest court, AP news agency reported.

Fire broke out early Friday morning at the  National Control Centre of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria in Osogbo.

Our correspondent gathered that the fire, which affected a transformer there, started around 3am.

The NCC, Osogbo, is one of the transmission centres for the distribution of generated electricity in the country.

Fire fighters were seen battling the inferno when our correspondent visited the scene at around 7am.
The fire raged till around 9am when it was contained.
Members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence  Corps, soldiers and staff of the Federal Road Safety Commission were controlling vehicular and human traffic at the centre.
The incident, which is expected to worsen the already epileptic power supply in the country, has already thrown many areas within the state into darkness.
The Deputy Governor of Osun State, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, was among those who had visited the place.

Schumacher's condition remains unchanged -Report

Doctors treating injured Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher are still working to bring him out of a coma.

The seven-time champion, 45, suffered a severe head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps on December 29.

“Michael is still in the wake-up phrase,” said his manager Sabine Kehm in a statement on Friday. “The situation has not changed.”

The German has been in a medically induced coma to help reduce the swelling in his brain.

Last month, Schumacher’s family said they still “strongly believe” in his recovery, adding: “We are aware the wake-up phase can take a long time.”

Investigators probing the accident said Schumacher had been going at the speed of “a very good skier” at the time of his crash in the resort of Meribel.

He had been skiing 8m off-piste when he fell and hit a rock, investigators said.

Experts reconstructed events leading up to the crash after examining Schumacher’s skiing equipment and viewing footage filmed on a camera attached to his helmet.

Schumacher retired from racing in 2012 after a 19-year career.

He won two titles with Benetton, in 1994 and 1995, before switching to Ferrari in 1996 and going on to win five straight titles from 2000.

HP releases another cheap Android tablet

HP has quietly announced a new tablet. Meet the HP 8. It’s a rather mundane tablet with a ho-hum screen and above par specs. It’s nothing special. But it’s cheap and cheap sells.

The HP 8 employs a 7.85-inch screen with a 1,024 x 768 resolution, which as Engadget points out, is a few pixels less than what’s found in competitor’s tablets. Inside, there is a quad-core chip, 1GB of RAM, and a rather small 3,800mAh battery.

HP is sticking to the smaller tablet size. The company launched the lackluster HP Slate 7 last year. It was garbage. But it was also cheap and likely allowed HP to get into the tablet game on the cheap. The HP 8 is more of the same in an updated package. HP likely doesn’t expect this to increase the company’s tablet marketshare, but rather test the waters while remaining active in this important market.

The HP 8 costs $170. At that price, it competes with the original (and dated) Amazon Kindle Fire and budget Samsung devices. It’s a smart move by HP.

It might be an uninspired tablet I’m digging the Hewlett-Packard branding under the screen, though. Classy and fresh.

Boko Haram cell: Court denies Kogi varsity lecturer bail

An Abuja Federal High Court on Friday turned down a bail application filed by a university lecturer, Dr Nazeef Yunus, of the Department of Islamic Studies, Kogi State University, who is facing trial for allegedly being a member of the Boko Haram sect.

The court equally refused bail to a businessman Alhaji Salami Abdullahi, and Umar Musa, who are being tried alongside the university don.

The three suspects were alleged to be the leaders of a Boko Haram cell in Kogi State.

The Abuja FHC, presided over by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, refused their bail applications in a ruling on Friday.

Justice Kolawole cited the murderous activities of the Boko Haram sect in the North East as the reason for the court’s refusal to admit the accused persons to bail.

He particularly condemned the recent massacre of scores of innocent students of the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe State by members of the Boko Haram.

Drawing attention to the incidents, Justice Kolawole said the court would fall short of its responsibility to dispense justice if it pretends that all is well in the country.

Although he admitted that the court retained its discretion to grant bail, he noted that the court was guided in exercising such discretion by the nature of the charge, the severity of punishment and the character of evidence, as well as the criminal record of the accused persons.

The judge also noted that the court considered the likelihood of a repetition of the offence before refusing the bail application.

According to him, even if the court opted to grant bail to the accused persons, the bail conditions would have been very stiff, considering the ongoing mindless campaign of terror launched by the Boko Haram sect in the past four weeks.

“I am a bit constrained that granting the accused persons bail will be very strict, but to do this, will lead to the court imposing outlandish bail conditions,” he said.

Justice Kolawole was of the view that granting bail and then imposing stringent conditions that the accused persons could not meet up with, was like giving a gift with the right and collecting it with the left hand.

He said, “It is the severity of the crime that matters, and one is hesitant to grant bail.

“This may not be a period for the court to embark on fanciful and sterile judicial analysis so that the court cannot send out wrong signals.”

Justice Kolawole added that the duty of the court in view of the current situation in the country was to assist the state to address the security challenges, adding that issues of national security could not be regarded as extraneous issues.

Abdullahi, the 2nd accused person, had asked the court to grant him bail to enable him to treat an ailment, but Justice Kolawole ruled that the said health challenge could be handled by a clinic in the prison as long as he had regular access to medical attention.

After refusing the bail applications, Justice Kolawole ordered and granted accelerated hearing of the terrorism case.

“She was clenching down on Oscar’s fingers as he was trying to open her airway.

“I tried to do a jaw lift manoeuvre, to try to open the airway, but it was very difficult with the clenching down.

“All during that time, there wasn’t any signs of life that I could see.

“I opened her right eyelid. The pupil was fixed dilated, and the cornea was milky – in other words, it was already drying out.

“So to me it was obvious she was mortally wounded.

“I looked at the rest of her body and I noted she had a wound in her right thigh, also a wound in the right upper arm.

“During that time … Oscar was crying all the time. He prayed to God to ‘please let her live, she must not die’.

“He said at one stage while he was praying ‘he will dedicate his life and her life to God if she would just only live and not die that night’.”

He added that Pistorius looked “sincere”: “He was crying, there were tears on his face. He was actively trying to assist her.”

Sky’s Alex Crawford, who was in court, said Pistorius was openly sobbing as the evidence was given.

Earlier, Pistorius’ defence team said it would have been “impossible” for neighbours to hear screams on the night Ms Steenkamp died.

Lawyer Barry Roux said neighbour Charl Peter Johnson’s claim that he heard gunshots followed by a woman screaming was incorrect.

UN calls for more troops in CAR

The head of the United Nations has asked the Security Council to bolster foreign forces in the Central African Republic by another 10,000 soldiers to protect civilians caught in ongoing violence between Christian and Muslim fighters.

Ban Ki-moon said he wanted the extra soldiers in CAR on top of the foreign troops already there, as the UNSC on Thursday held talks on the situation in the country.

Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor James Bays, reporting from the UN headquarters in New York, said Ban’s report suggested the troops should be given the right to use force if necessary.

Herve Ladsous, the UN head of peacekeeping, also made it clear that this force would be in addition to the 6,000-plus soldiers from the African Union and the 2,000 French troops already there.

There also seemed to be a dispute between UK and US and France. The French have said that they are keeping their troops in CAR as a “rapid-reaction force”.

“The UK and US believe that perhaps the UN is entering into a long commitment in CAR without the mandate clearly defined – they would prefer more of a policing mission and not a very large military force,” Bays said.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera’s Tania Page, reporting from Bangui, said the capital city had calmed down, although there were killings daily.

“Beyond the capital, things are more insecure … particularly the north, near the border with Chad, it is a no-go zone,” she said.

Page said humanitarian operations in the area were scarce.

DR Congo warlord, Katanga, faces ICC verdict

Judges at International Criminal Court are due to give their verdict at the war crimes trial of Congolese militia leader Germain Katanga.

He is accused of being behind the 2003 massacre of more than 200 villagers in the gold-rich Ituri province of north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Other charges include sexual slavery, rape and enlisting child soldiers.

Mr Katanga, who was transferred to The Hague by the Congolese authorities in 2007, denies the allegations.

The fighting in Ituri, which broke out in 1999 and continued until 2003, started as a struggle for control of land and resources.

But it escalated into inter-ethnic war, exacerbated by the presence of Uganda troops, that killed an estimated 50,000 people.

The charges against Mr Katanga all relate to an attack on Bogoro that took place on 24 February 2003.

ICC prosecutors at The Hague say the assault was designed to “wipe out” the entire strategically important village, which is close to the Ugandan border.

According to the prosecution, the attack happened in the early hours of the morning and some villagers were shot while they slept, while others were cut up with machetes to save bullets.

At the time Mr Katanga was 24 years old and the alleged commander of the Patriotic Resistance Force of Ituri, which had the support of the Lendu ethnic group.

The prosecution say as the FRPI’s leader he was to blame for the atrocities committed by his fighters against the villagers from the Hema ethnic group.

It is also alleged that the women who survived the massacre were raped or kept as sex slaves.

Another person was charged by the ICC in connection with Bogoro attack.

But in December 2012 Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui was acquitted as judges found there was insufficient evidence to show that he was the commander of National Integrationist Front, which also took part in the raid.

The BBC’s Maud Jullien in DR Congo says Mr Katanga was known to his men as “Simba”, meaning lion.

Those who knew him describe him as a discreet man but ruthless on the battlefield, she says.

After the end of the Ituri conflict, peace deals were signed and Mr Katanga was given a position in the Congolese army.

But a year after joining the military he was imprisoned for bad behaviour and was still in prison when the ICC issued its arrest warrant for him.

His is one of the longest-running cases at the ICC.

In July 2012, Thomas Lubanga, who was also a militia leader in Ituri, was sentenced to 14 years in jail by the ICC for recruiting and using child soldiers.

Malaria spreads to higher altitudes -Study

Warmer temperatures are causing malaria to spread to higher altitudes, a study suggests.

Researchers have found that people living in the highlands of Africa and South America are at an increased risk of catching the mosquito-borne disease during hotter years.

They believe that temperature rises in the future could result in millions of additional cases in some areas.

The research is published in the journal Science.

Prof Mercedes Pascual, from the University of Michigan in the US, who carried out the research, said: “The impact in terms of increasing the risk of exposure to disease is very large.”

Areas at higher altitudes have traditionally provided a haven from this devastating disease.

Both the malaria parasite and the mosquito that carries it struggle to cope with the cooler air.

Prof Pascual said: “The risk of the disease decreases with altitude and this is why historically people have settled in these higher regions.”

But the scientists say the disease is entering new regions that had previously been malaria-free.

To investigate, scientists looked at densely populated areas in the highlands of Colombia and Ethiopia, where there are detailed records of both temperature and malaria cases from the 1990s to 2005.

They found that in warmer years, malaria shifted higher into the mountains, while in cooler years it was limited to lower elevations.

“This expansion could in a sense account for a substantial part of the increase of cases we have already observed in these areas,” said Prof Pascual.

The team believes that rising temperatures could cause a further spread.

In Ethiopia, where nearly half of the population live at an altitude of between 1,600m (5,250ft) and 2,400m, the scientists believe there could be many more cases.

“We have estimated that, based on the distribution of malaria with altitude, a 1C rise in temperature could lead to an additional three million cases in under-15-year-olds per year,” said Prof Pascual.

The team believes that because people living in areas that have never been exposed to malaria are particularly vulnerable to the disease, attempts to stop the spread should be focused on areas at the edge of the spread. The disease is easier to control there than at lower altitudes where it has already established.

According to the latest estimates from the World Health Organization, there were about 207 million cases of malaria in 2012 and an estimated 627,000 deaths. Most deaths occur among children living in Africa.

EPL: Agger defends himself over tackle that injured Wilshere

Daniel Agger has defended his tackle on Jack Wilshere which left the Arsenal and England man with a broken foot.

Liverpool defender Agger caught Wilshere on the foot with a heavy challenge during England’s 1-0 win over Denmark on Wednesday night.

Wilshere played on for almost 50 minutes after receiving treatment for the injury, but after being cleared of any serious injury straight after the match Arsenal and England’s worst fears were confirmed on Thursday when scans showed the midfielder has suffered a hairline fracture to his left foot.

Wilshere is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines meaning he is set to miss the run-in to the rest of the Premier League season and his World Cup hopes are now hanging by a thread.

“It was 50-50. You have to go for those challenges,” Agger told the Daily Mirror.

“I was going for the ball and I think I got the ball, but the referee didn’t.”

England boss Roy Hodgson absolved Agger of any blame for the injury and admitted he felt sorry for Wilshere.

“It’s always sad when you have a player come from a club, use him on international duty and he gets an injury,” noted Hodgson.

“It’s very sad and disappointing for Jack and Arsenal but unfortunately these things happen.

“It was an honest challenge but he took a nasty kick and I can only hope he recovers as early as possible
