Incoming Governor Accuses Outgoing Governor Of Last Minute Looting

To be honest, these are the kinds of stories we have been expecting to hear from states where new governors were elected who belong to a different party from that of the incumbent. It’s like a tradition.

But this time, we’ve been hearing stories about incumbents like Mukhtar Yero in Kaduna hailing the incoming Nasir El-Rufai, and the other reciprocating. In Bauchi, governor-elect Mohammed Abubakar held a meeting with the outgoing Isa Yuguda, and so on and so forth.

Well at last in Plateau, we have our first case of an incoming governor blasting the incumbent.

Simon Lalong of the APC has accused the outgoing Jonah Jang of looting government treasury, hurriedly selling government assets and unwarranted withdrawals in order to put the incoming administration in a precarious condition.

Jang has completed two terms as governor and won his senate race.

Governor-elect Lalong, who is a former speaker of the Plateau assembly, further accused Jang of late massive recruitments and lopsided employments.

He said that Jang was also removing furniture and other movable household materials from the newly-built N9bn Government House at Rayfield.

Jonathan Tells Varsities To Access N1.3tr Tetfund Money

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday advised all public universities to access the N1.3tr made available through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to improve the quality of education in the country.

Jonathan, who is also Visitor to the Federal University of Technology, Minna, gave the advice at 24th Convocation Ceremony of the institution, held at the main campus, Gidan Kwano.

The President was represented by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie.

He said, “Government has, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, made provision for the sum of N1.3tr to be disbursed to all public universities to improve on the quality of university education with regards to infrastructural and personnel development.

“I, therefore, urge the management of this university to ensure the judicious use of its allocation from the intervention fund to enhance FUT, Minna.”

He lamented the challenge of unemployment as the daily reality of many graduates, urging public universities to include entrepreneurial education in the undergraduate curricula.

“We have also followed this up with such intervention projects as the Graduate Internship Scheme, Youth Enterprise with innovation (YouWin) and other opportunities through the National Directorate of Employment.”

The Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, Prof. Rufa’I Alkali, said the Federal Government had positioned the Bank of Industry, the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria as well as micro finance banks to help develop small businesses that would reduce unemployment in the country.

Alkali commended the Federal Government for the N2.7bn allocation to the university under the Needs Assessment intervention to address the challenges of accommodation, provision of water, laboratories, workshop and equipment.

What Happens to YouWIN Programme As New Government Comes on Board? #youwin

The fate of YouWIN Programme as Gen. Muhammad Buhari comes on board.
No doubt a lot of people are afraid that the YouWIN programme would be scraped and a lot of people have been calling me to inquiry about the continuity of the programme now that Goodluck Jonathan is no more in power. Have been wanting to write about this and inform all my esteemed readers and followers but I have been so busy concentrating on ensuring the Fund Business Kit is ready and I thank God for that.
First of all let me start with YouWIN3 – YouWIN3 with Jonthan/Buhari administration
To be frank with any YouWIN3 awardee, I will say you are very lucky. You are lucky in the sense that the budget has already been past and the fund for YouWIN3 has been deposited with CBN. Immediately awardees signed agreement with FG and all the eligible awardees are collated and the total award amount collated, the funds is then sent CBN who would then send it to participating banks when you are approved. Once you meet the milestones and you are approved alongside other awardees and the approved names are sent to the banks for disbursement, you would get your money. I don’t really see problem with YouWIN3 except maybe delay in disbursement.
As am talking to you, some of my mentees that made it in YouWIN3 are to be visited by monitors from this week to see what they have done with the first tranche disbursement and to know if they are ready for 2nd tranche disbursement.
It would also interest you to know that YouWIN is organizing a 2-day Financial Management Training for both YouWIN 1 & 2 and they have also launched YouWIN Connect last week  for all YouWIN awardees to list their products and services.
Read below the first paragraph of the message that was sent to me:
As part of our continuous efforts to enrich your YouWiN! Experience, we would like to introduce you to the new online web platform, “YouWiN! Connect.”  This platform serves as a marketplace created to connect all awardees and promote the development of strong business relationships. Its functionalities allow all awardees to upload and showcase their products and services for the viewing and interest of other awardees as well as potential investors. Among the other benefits include:
A lot of people are exhibiting fear that YouWIN is no more, for me I am very positive and optimistic about YouWIN programme.
YOUWIN4
I know a lot of people are concerned about YouWIN4 now that Goodluck Jonathan administration is out. In Nigeria the tradition is that any new government don’t like continuing with previous government or administration policies especially when the new admin is from opposition party and the policies are not back by law or any degree. This makes a lot of people to be worried.
I have asked many questions from those in authority and everyone is just hopeful that something positive would come out from it.
For me I’m optimistic about YouWIN4 because the funds for the programme has already been sent to the senate by Ministry of Finance and by the time the budget for this year is passed, the new administration would have to follow the budget(Note that implementation may not be 100% and they have power to cancel any project). They won’t come up with their own budget or new budget and send to senate for passage, it is next year that they would have full control of the budget.
Though the programme was initiated during GEJ admin, but it would interest you to know that the programme is not being managed by the office of the presidency, but by Ministry of Finance and is Minister of Finance that do approve list of awardees and disbursement of funds to awardee.
Another thing is that YouWIN programme is a World Bank partnered project, other international organization partnered project and banks in Nigeria also partnered and provide supports. Therefore is not Goodluck Jonathan pet project, is Federal Government project that some states and other government agencies like NDDC are coping from YouWIN project.
Don’t forget that the new admin is more concern about youth empowerments and job creations and the information I heard is that they may review it to accommodate more youths and the amount might be reviewed too. They may also come up with their own project.
It also interests you to know that Goodluck is concerned about smooth transition briefing Buhari of his administration programmes. Therefore, GEJ has setup committee for smooth handover and briefing. He has directed all ministries to prepare their handover notes and submit to SGF. They are mandated to ensure proper documentation is made and also document projects inherited by his administration and the one initiated by his administration. Briefings are expected to include the status of the projects and their implementation.
All ministries are mandated by the president to ensure everything that required the President’s approval must be presented to him latest on May 13 so that the incoming government would not accuse the outgoing government of rushing projects.
For now let’s just be hopeful and keep our fingers across. I will always be here to keep you posted when I have useful information. For me am very positive about it.
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket…
I believe you are entrepreneur and a serious one for that matter; you don’t have to put all your effort and hope on YouWIN alone, you have other programme to harness and use it to position your business. Opportunity meets those who prepare for it. You need to harness other opportunities and something good can come out from it.
A lot of my mentees won the Tony Elumelu Entreperneurship Programme TEEP, some Shell Live Wire, Diamond Bank Building Entrepreneurs Today just to mention a few. There are programmes that I have posted on my website that you can click below to check them out:

Impeachment: Labour To Shut Down Ekiti For Fayose As Group Writes CJN

• Afe Babalola urges APC lawmakers to rescind decision • Court cautions lawmakers, governor against causing trouble Tobi Soniyi in Abuja and Olakiitan Victor in Ado Ekiti Following attempt to impeach the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, the Organised Labour in the state has declared half day total shutdown in Ado Ekiti today, in solidarity with the state governor. Members of the organised labour, under the auspices of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), gathered at the popular Fajuyi Park Resort centre yesterday where they declared Friday a work-free day for workers of the state civil service.

The organised labour also placed embargo on human and vehicular movements within Ado Ekiti metropolis from 6a.m. till noon. Addressing journalists, the unions which spoke through the Chairman of the NLC, Com Ayodeji Aluko, warned the political class against heating up the polity, lamenting that the breach of public peace had also been coming from a few elites and certain political group which sees the state governorship as their sole right. Meanwhile, in a letter signed by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) and addressed to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon Adewale Omirin, he begged the lawmakers to sheathe their swords for the state to move forward, as he commended the lawmaker for accepting the Supreme Court judgement that validated Fayose’s election in the June 21 governorship election.

Also a group called Ekiti Justice Group (EJG), had, while addressing journalists on the same issue, described the action of the former Speaker of the assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, directing the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, to constitute a probe panel against Fayose as bizarre, ignoble, irresponsible and downright unlawful. EJG called on the CJN to prevail on Justice Daramola not to allow his respected office and personality to be dragged unduly into any illegality and the murky waters of politics. Aluko, who rued attempt by 19 APC lawmakers to impeach Fayose, lamented the sporadic shootings noticed at the House of Assembly a couple of weeks ago, when members of the PDP had to occupy the Assembly to forestall Fayose from being impeached, saying his members would have been killed, but for providence. “As critical stakeholders, we deem it fit to make a clarion call to all Ekiti indigenes home and abroad to project the need for peace and stability in our state. We want to implore our politicians to embrace the true precepts of democratic practices by imbibing the principles of sportsmanship. Aluko said the consistent restiveness being witnessed in the state could be ascribed to political intolerance on the part of the political gladiators, adding that the scenario is denting the image of the State among the comity of States.

However, EJG said in the letter signed by its National Coordinator, Mr Gbenga Babawibe, and addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mahmud Mohammed, who is the chairman of NJC that “Omirin is still contesting the legality or otherwise of his impeachment in Suit Nos FHC/ABJ/CS/885/2014 and FHC/L/CS/1823/2014, respectively, and a decision is yet to be delivered on same. “It is elementary that once an action is subjudiced, a party to the suit is not expected to take any action capable of overreaching any decision the Court of Law may make in relation to such a suit.” The letter read further that: “We are aware that following the Inauguration of Fayose as the governor of the state on October 15, 2014, some members of the state House of Assembly abdicated their responsibility as elected assembly men, which led to the impeachment of the former Speaker, Omirin, and some other principal officers of the assembly.”

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja yesterday adjourned to April 29 for the hearing of the suit seeking to stop the All Progressives Congress (APC) members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly from initiating impeachment proceeding again the Governor, Ayodele Fayose and his deputy, Kolapo Olusola. Before adjourning the matter, the trial judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, however warned the parties in the suit to steer clear of any action that could cause trouble or chaos in the state. He further stated that any party that discovered that the other was making moves to foment trouble should bring an application before the court.
The plaintiffs, the Speaker of the House of Assembly (described as being occupied by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) factional Speaker, Olugbemi Joseph Dele); Ekiti State House of Assembly, Fayose and Olusola through their counsel Ahmed Raji (SAN), had approached the court via a motion ex-parte seeking to halt impeachment moves against the governor At the last adjourned date, the court ordered the defendants in the suit, the APC factional speaker of the House of Assembly, Omirin, and the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Daramola to appear before it and show cause why the plaintiff’s request should not be granted. When the matter came up yesterday, plaintiffs’ counsel informed the court that the defendants had not yet filed any process.

Responding, the defendants counsel, Terence Venber, told the court that his clients were served last Saturday, which was an election day and that was still within the three days allowed by the rule of court for them to respond.

Giving a short ruling, the court noted that since April 11 was an election day, it would be deemed to be a public holiday and the service of the process would take effect from the next working day, from which the three days provided by the court rule would start counting.

It was on that note that court adjourned to enable the defendants file and serve their response. Apart from Omirin and Justice Daramola, other defendants in the suit are the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Suleiman Abba, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In the ex-parte application, the plaintiffs had urged the court to grant an interim injunction setting aside the impeachment notice already served on the governor and the deputy and also restraining the defendants from taking any further steps in the impeachment moves.

They also argued that the act by Omirin to issue an impeachment notice and serve same on the governor and the deputy governor as Speaker of the House of Assembly amounted to impersonating the incumbent Speaker. The plaintiffs also urged the court to grant the prayers and make the interim injunctions to subsist pending the determination of their motion on notice for interlocutory injunctions seeking the same set of prayers. Raji urged the court to grant the prayers “in the interest of justice, public order, peace and safety of the people of the state”. However, the judge in his ruling, rather than granting the interim injunctions, ordered the parties to appear in court to convince the court why the plaintiffs’ prayers for interim injunction should not be granted. According to the judge, “The order is hereby made directing the 1st to 4th defendants (Omirin, IGP, INEC and Ekiti CJ), to appear before this court on April 16, 2015 and show cause why the interim order sought by the plaintiffs via an ex parte motion dated April 7, 2015 should not be made by this court.” The court also granted leave to serve Omirin and Justice Daramola, who reside in Ekiti State, outside jurisdiction. It also ordered that Omirin and the Ekiti State Chief Judge be served through advertisement in a national newspaper, while making a separate order that the Chief Judge be served with processes of court through the office of the Chief Registrar of the Ekiti State High Court.

In the main suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/302/2015, the plaintiffs are seeking nine prayers among which is “an order setting aside the purported notice of impeachment and all steps taken by the 1st defendant (Omirin) with other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff (Ekiti State House of Assembly) in relation to the purported issuance and service of the said notice of impeachment for the purpose of commencing and concluding the impeachment proceedings against Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Olusola Kolapo, except and until there is absolute compliance with provisions of section 36(1) and section 188(1), (2), (3) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).” They also want an order prohibiting the 1st defendant (Omirin) and other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff (Ekiti State House of Assembly) from further taking any step, or engaging in unlawful activities relating to the impeachment of Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Olusola Kolapo, except and until there is absolute compliance with provisions of section 36(1) and section 188(1), (2), (3) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). In addition, the plaintiffs want an order prohibiting the Chief Judge of Ekiti State from taking any step or action in relation to the request of the 1st defendant (Omirin) for the purpose of appointing a panel of seven persons to investigate and purported allegations of gross misconduct against Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Olusola Kolapo, except and until there is absolute compliance with provisions of section 36(1) and section 188(1), (2), (3) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Iran calls for immediate Yemen peace talks

Iran has called for immediate peace talks between Yemen’s warring parties, official media said Friday, as rebels backed by Tehran battle loyalist forces supported by Saudi-led air strikes.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif made the appeal during a telephone call with UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Thursday, the IRNA news agency said.
Iran has proposed a peace plan for Yemen that calls for a ceasefire followed by foreign-mediated talks by all sides.
“Mr Zarif referred to the Iranian four-point plan to end the crisis in Yemen, stressing the importance of an immediate dialogue between the Yemenis and said Iran was ready to help resolve this crisis,” IRNA said.
“Ban Ki-moon acknowledged the efforts of the Islamic Republic to peacefully resolve the crisis in Yemen and focused on the immediate provision of medicines and food to those affected,” it said.
Ban called Thursday for an immediate ceasefire in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is bombing Huthi Shiite rebels fighting forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who has fled to Saudi Arabia.
The UN chief is searching for a new envoy to seek a political solution following the resignation of Jamal Benomar, a Moroccan-born diplomat who lost the confidence of Saudi Arabia and its allies.
Riyadh and Washington accuse Tehran of supplying arms to the rebels, which Iran strongly denies.
The Huthis have “no need” to be trained and armed by Iran, said Hossein Salami, deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guards, the elite army of the Iranian regime.
“They say we have trained Ansarullah (Huthi rebels) and we provided them with weapons and military support, but this is not true,” he told Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen television, in an interview published Friday by Iran’s Tasnim agency.
These charges are intended to present Iran “as a source of insecurity in the region,” he said.
The issue of securing the strategic Strait of Bab al-Mandeb, between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, is “a political excuse” because the Huthis and their allies “will never be a threat to the trade and shipping in the strait”, he added.

Robbers raid Abuja transport firm, kill policeman

At least one police officer lost his life on Thursday night when a gang of robbers stormed the office of Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company in Katampe, along Kubwa Expressway.
Mr Tunde Akintola, the company’s Head of Marketing and Communication, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja that the gang of five armed robbers was armed with guns and other dangerous weapons.
Akintola said aside from killing the police officer, they also inflicted different degrees of injuries on some workers.
The unfortunate incident happened around 8p.m. on Thursday, when most staff members had closed for the day.
“We had a few administrative personnel doing skeletal duties, as well as security personnel around the office.
“The gang of about five robbers entered the company through the administrative gate and forced their way into the cash office, killing the policeman and injuring some other staff members in the process.”
Akintola said the company had yet to ascertain the degree of loss suffered by the company as the matter was being investigated by the police.
He, however, said the loss could be minimal as the company did not handle cash on a large scale.
“Maybe they thought that all our buses bring cash to the office at the end of each day; but that is not the case.
“Our ticketing is handled by agents who pay directly into the company’s account every day, but that is not to say that we didn’t suffer any financial loss to the robbery.
“We have imprest and some other contingency cash which were stolen, but no large-scale loss,” he said.
Akintola said investigation had commenced on the robbery, adding that a number of suspects were undergoing interrogation.
He commended the Nigerian police for their prompt response, while commiserating with the family of the deceased policeman.
“You know it is difficult to point accusing fingers at any direction, but the police have commenced investigation into the matter, and some suspects are being interrogated.
“We thank, the police for their prompt response when they were contacted, and we pray for the repose of the soul of their late colleague,” he said.
He added that the remains of the late police officer had been deposited at the Maitama District Hospital mortuary, while the injured staff members were being treated in an undisclosed hospital.

South Africans march against attacks on foreigners

Thousands of people have attended a march in South Africa's coastal city of Durban in solidarity with the country's foreign nationals.
The march on Thursday, which included religious leaders and concerned citizens, comes after weeks of attacks against foreign nationals in which at least five people have been killed and 74 people arrested since the end of March, according to Colonel Jay Naicker, the police spokesperson.
Al Jazeera's Mukelwa Hlatshwayo, reporting from the march in the coastal city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, said that as many as 5,000 people had joined the procession and that the atmosphere was calm with people ulilating and singing songs of solidarity.

Vox pop: People speak out against xenophobia in S Africa

Reuters news agency reported that bullets had been shot into the crowd but our reporter said she had only witnessed a few people shouting into the crowd on the sidelines of the procession that "foreigners must go home."
Many shops remained closed in the business capital of the country, Johannesburg in the Gauteng province fearing attacks as well.
Groups of people were said to have travelled to Durban from other provinces to join in the show of solidarity with the foreign nationals.
Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa, reporting from Durban, tweeted the following:
Similar attacks occurred in 2008, leaving at least 60 people dead.
Messages circulating on social media warned people in Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal to be on high alert for possible attacks and to also remain indoors.
Seeking refuge
In Malawi, officials have set up transit camps expected to house Malawians returning to the country, Kondwani Nankhumwa, the country's information minister, said.
More than 2,000 foreigners have already sought shelter in refugee camps in Durban, a South African aid group said on Wednesday.
The refugee camps, set up on sports fields around Durban, will not be large enough if attacks on immigrants continue, said Imtiaz Sooliman of the Gift of the Givers organisation.
Those who can afford it are planning to leave the country, he said.
"They've lost their houses, they've lost their businesses, they've lost everything," Sooliman said.
The organisation made the following appeal to the government on social media on Wednesday:
South Africa's President Jacob Zuma condemned the violence and assigned several cabinet ministers to work on the problem with officials in KwaZulu-Natal province.
The government is addressing South African citizens' "complaints about illegal and undocumented migrants, the takeover of local shops and other businesses by foreign nationals as well as perceptions that foreign nationals perpetrate crime", Zuma's office said in a statement.
He also issued a warning to illegally operating foreign-owned businesses to close their doors.
Some foreign nationals boycotted the march in protest against the South African government's efforts to resolve the problem.
Our producer, Hlatshwayo, said that they are saying that government should protect them.
"There are still those out there feel that there are people who still don't want them there and that this has not been addressed."
She added that there is a feeling that the reach of the social media campaign was limited to the economic class that had access to it and that the anti-xenophobia message needed to be taken to the community as well.

Anti-immigrant attacks kill 5 in Rainbow Nation

Thousands sought refuge in temporary shelters in South Africa after mobs with machetes attacked immigrants in Durban, leaving at least five people dead, an aid group said Thursday.
Heavily armed police have scrambled to stop clashes this week after local residents accused immigrants from other African nations of taking their jobs.
The attacks in Durban killed two immigrants and three South Africans, including a 14-year-old boy, authorities said.
"There has been an outpouring of support from ordinary South Africans who are disgusted with the attacks not only because they are foreign, or African, but because they are fellow human beings," said Gift of the Givers charity, which is helping those seeking refuge.
"We are preparing aid packages for those who may journey onwards to their home countries."
The charity said about 8,500 people fled to refugee centers or police stations this week because of the violence. That doesn't count anyone who fled their homes to other, private accommodations, the group said.
It said it hopes the violence is limited to Durban, but assured immigrants that it has a facility in Johannesburg to help those who might need shelter there.
"We have tents and all essential supplies on standby but pray that sanity prevails and this does not become necessary," it said.
In the past, Johannesburg has been the epicenter of anti-immigrant tensions.
In 2008, scores were killed in attacks in the poorest areas of Johannesburg. Most of the victims were Zimbabweans who had fled repression and dire economic circumstances. In that attack, police arrested more than 200 people for various crimes including rape, murder, robbery and theft.

Strange disease ravages Ondo community; 28 dead #disease #ondo #nigeria

The Ondo State Government is working hard to control a strange disease which suddenly broke out in the Ode-Irele community of Ondo state, leading to the death of no fewer than 28 people in the past three days.
Residents say the disease broke out three days ago and spread rapidly around the community, killing its victim within 24 hours.
The cause of the disease remained unknown.
Experts say preliminary reports from victims revealed neurologic clinical symptoms: blindness, and loss of consciousness.
Ebola Alert, an evidence-driven group of volunteer professionals who helped with the Ebola Virus Disease interventions in the country, said 28 people have died from the disease.
But the State Health Commissioner, Dayo Adeyanju, put the number of dead victims at 12.
Mr. Adeyanju, while briefing newsmen in Akure, said preliminary investigations showed that the disease is not Ebola “as it does not manifest any of its symptoms, but it attacks the central nervous system of the victims”.
He said the state government, after getting information on the disease, immediately deployed officials who took samples from victims which was sent to Lagos for laboratory analysis to help understand the nature of the disease.
Mr. Adeyanju, who warned against spreading false information on social media, said the government is on top of the situation, and advised people in the council area to report any strange illness to the nearest health facility.
He assured that the government is also doing its best to contain the disease from further spreading out of the town while those infected were being quarantined at the General Hospital, Irele, with other patients moved out of the facility.
The Health Commissioner also advised people of the area to avoid handling dead bodies at this period to help contain further spread of the disease.
A journalist who visited the affected community Thursday said he was told by residents that the ailment had spiritual undertone.
“Community leaders said some people broke into a shrine, and the god became angry with them, striking all those people who have hands in the act,” the journalist said, asking not to be named.
“Our team also saw people performing rituals in the community. They believe that the ritual will appease the god and that the disease will end.”
But the state’s Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, said he was not aware of any spiritual dimension to the development.
“All I can tell you is that medical experts are on ground, attending to victims and doing all the necessary tests. Government is working hard to contain the disease, and I can tell you that it is under control,” Mr. Akinmade told PREMIUM TIMES.
Ebola Alert later posted an update on its twitter handle on Thursday night saying the disease is under control and that its cause was being investigated.
The organisation said the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation, and the National Centre for Disease Control had been alerted of the outbreak.

According to PUNCH, no fewer than 12 people have died from an unknown epidemic which recently hit Ode Irele, a serene community in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dayo Adeyanju, who made this known to journalists in Akure on Wednesday, did not say when and how the disease was first noticed in the community.
He however added that four persons with fresh symptoms of the disease had been isolated at the General Hospital, Ode Irele.
According to Adeyanju, preliminary reports showed that prior to the deaths, all the victims, complained of headaches and later lost their sight before dying.
The commissioner explained that the symptoms of the epidemic were different from those of Ebola Virus Disease, which are diarrhoea, vomiting and haemorrhage.
While giving the assurance that everything possible would be done to ensure that the disease did not spread, Adeyanju said the state government had already sought the aid of the World Health Organisation and other partners.
He added that the Disease Surveillance Team and volunteers that were engaged in the state during the EVD outbreak had been activated.
Adeyanju also disclosed that the Personnel Protective Equipment purchased by the government to curtail Ebola was being used in the handling of the disease.
According to him, samples taken from the victims had been sent to Lagos State for proper investigation.
The commissioner also said the government had commenced an awareness campaign through which the public was being encouraged to report any case of the disease .
While stating that the state already had a cremation law in place, Adeyanju advised relations of the victims against burying them at home.
He warned the public against sensationalising the disease, particularly in the social media, so as not to create fears among the people.
Adeyanju’s Information counterpart, Kayode Akinmade, said the government had already contacted the Federal Ministry of Health over the disease.
A professor of infectious diseases and Chief Executive Officer, EbolaAlert, Bakare Lawal, said that samples obtained from the victims were being analysed to enable experts to determine whether the disease was bacterial or viral infections.
Meanwhile, online search vide the healthline.com reveals that the symptoms mimic those of Temporal arteritis.
The portal states, “Temporal arteritis is a condition in which the temporal arteries, which supply blood to the head and brain, become inflamed or damaged. It is also known as cranial arteritis or giant cell arteritis.”
It notes that although this condition usually occurs in the temporal arteries, temporal arteritis can occur in almost any medium to large artery in the body.
The portal adds that older individuals over 60 years of age are more likely than-younger individuals to develop the condition, while women are almost four times as likely as men to develop temporal arteritis.
The portal advises that although the exact cause of the condition is unknown, there may be a link with the body’s auto-immune response.
“In addition, excessive doses of antibiotics and certain severe infections have been linked to temporal arteritis. There is no known prevention for the condition. However, once diagnosed, temporal arteritis can be treated to minimise complications,” it says.
Symptoms of temporal arteritis can include excessive sweating, disturbances in vision (blurred vision, double vision, reduced vision), sudden, permanent loss of vision in one eye, throbbing headache (usually in the temples), fatigue and weakness, general ill feeling, loss of appetite, muscle aches, transient jaw pain, fever, unintentional weight loss, bleeding gums, facial pain, hearing loss, mouth sores, and drooping eyelid.
Others are joint pain and stiffness, shoulder and hip pain and stiffness, depression, tenderness in the scalp and temple areas.
The portal warns that it is important to see the doctor for a thorough examination to obtain an accurate diagnosis.
According to the U.S-based National Institute of Health, nearly 40 per cent of affected individuals will also experience symptoms such as nerve pain or respiratory problems.
WHO had on October 20, 2014 declared Nigeria free of EVD, a deadly disease that was imported on July 20, 2014 by a Liberian-born American diplomat, Patrick Sawyer.
Sawyer died of the disease on July 24 at the First Consultants Hospital in Obalende Lagos State.
Before WHO gave the country a clean bill of health, the disease had claimed exactly seven lives out of the 19 cases recorded in the country.
The first Nigerian victim who died of the EVD was Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh, who attended to Sawyer while he was on admission in Lagos.

An unidentified disease is ravaging the Ode-Irele community in Ondo State and has left 28 people dead in the past three days.
According to Premium Times, the disease broke out three days ago, and authorities say it is not Ebola.
State Health Commissioner, Dayo Adeyanju said “preliminary investigations show that the disease is not Ebola as it does not manifest any of its symptoms, but it attacks the central nervous system of the victims.”
Victims reportedly suffer from symptoms including blindness, and loss of consciousness, and then die within 24 hours.
Blood samples from the victims have been taken to a Lagos laboratory for examination.
Adeyanju says the situation is under control, and he has advised people of the area to avoid handling dead bodies at this period to help contain further spread of the disease.
A journalist who visited the area stated that some residents believe the disease is a spiritual attack.
“Community leaders said some people broke into a shrine, and the god became angry with them, striking all those people who have hands in the act,” the journalist said, asking not to be named. Our team also saw people performing rituals in the community. They believe that the ritual will appease the god and that the disease will end,” said the journalist.
State Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, has refuted the spiritual attacks theory stating that “all I can tell you is that medical experts are on ground, attending to victims and doing all the necessary tests. Government is working hard to contain the disease, and I can tell you that it is under control.”

South Africans attacks on foreigners increasing – Nigerian Union #southafrica #nigeria

The President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, said on Friday that xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals were  on the increase.
Anyene told the News Agency of Nigeria on phone from Pretoria, South Africa, that the  mechanic workshop  of a Nigerian was completely destroyed  early on Friday in Johannesburg.
“In the early hours of  today (Friday), the  mechanic workshop of a Nigerian,  with 10 cars and all the tools inside,  was destroyed by some South Africans.
“The build up to the attack started last night when the South Africans started gathering in the neighbourhood of the Nigerian.
“The Nigerians living there did not sleep and early today, the South Africans struck,’’ he said.
Anyene said when the South African police intervened, the attackers  dared them and opened fire.
He said though the police chased them away, the attackers  re-grouped and still carried out the act.
“The attacks are spreading and Nigerians do not sleep again. They keep vigil to ensure that they are not taken unawares.
“There is tension everywhere. Nigerians have closed their shops for fear of being attacked,”he said.
Anyene urged the Federal Government to engage  the South African authorities  in dialogue with a view to halting the attacks immediately.
“South Africa has lots of businesses in Nigeria and they are doing well. Also, South Africans live in Nigeria and it is on record that  Nigerians have never carried out xenophobic attacks  on fellow Africans,” he said.
He said though the South African government had  been responding to the attacks, it was not enough because more foreigners were being attacked every day.
Anyene  added, “Though no Nigerian has been killed,  it may get to that  because we have had close shaves with death.
“The real  truth is that Nigerians have lost so much in their businesses to the attacks. The time has come for the Nigerian government to make a categorical statement on these attacks.
“We are not happy with what is happening and something urgent must be done to stop these attacks.”
