Ekiti Speaker defends call for independence of legislature

Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Hon. Oluwawole has defended his colleagues on the call for independence of the legislature. Oluwawole expressed his support while addressing journalists after a meeting of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria held in Abuja at the weekend.

In a statement by the Speaker’s Media Assistant, Mr Stephen Gbadamosi, said this was just as the conference has resolved to hold election into its executive offices in September.

“There are three arms of government, the executive, legislature and the judiciary. They are supposed to be independent of one another.

“So, it is not a new thing for legislators to be asking for independence for them to be able to perform their duties effectively without interference from the executive. “So, I believe that as a civilized society, the theory of separation of powers must be put into practice. On the issue of the lawmakers granting permission to executive to obtain loan, it depends on the circumstances.

For instance, if a particular state legislature feels that the workers or pensioners have been denied their benefits, it is a matter of necessity to protect their interest. “In the first place, those are the ones that voted them into power.

The legislature may grant the permission. It is not an aberration to do that. And it does not mean the legislature is trying to bribe that executive. Far from it. “I believe also that every state has its own peculiar problem and they have to tackle those problems according to the situations and circumstances, vis-a-vis the financial capacity of the state,” he said.

Earlier, after the speakers’ meeting, their spokesman, Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Prince Suraj Adekumbi, disclosed that the body would hold election into its executive offices by September, having constituted a three-man committee to handle the conduct of the exercise.
