Gunmen suspected to be assassins on Tuesday night stormed the residence of a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr. Deji Adejobi.
Our correspondent gathered that Adejobi was shot by his assailants who invaded his residence close to the Tollgate area of Ile Ife.
Residents of the area said the gunmen, who stormed the residence around 10pm, shot into the air to scare away residents before firing their target.
The deceased was said to be the older brother of the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi.
One of the children of the late don, Oyin, narrated amidst tears how the gunmen killed her father and threw the family into a mournful mood.
She said, “We finished our evening prayer at 10:05pm when dad drove into the compound. Then I overheard an argument between the gateman and some people. I quickly looked from the window and I saw another black car that entered our compound together with dad’s car.
“Our gateman was quizzing the occupants of the other car but they hit him and ordered him to lie down.
“The men in the black car stepped out of their car before dad could alight from his and one of them shot into the air. Two of them moved into dad’s car while others came inside the house.”
Oyin added that their grandma begged the gunmen, who went inside the house, but they heard gunshot from outside twice.
She said further that the gunmen took away the lecture’s car around 10:20pm and she heard her late dad begging them not to whisk him away.
“We thought they took him away and we were praying for his safety without knowing that he had been killed,” she said.
According to her, the police team found Adejobi’s body where it was.
Efforts to know if the police were aware of the case were unsuccessful as the Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, dropped the call while our correspondent was asking him about the case.
But the Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, who confirmed the incident, said the university community was shocked to hear the news of the killing of the don.
He said, “We were shocked to hear that he was killed. We just pray God will give the family the fortitude to bear the loss. It is terrible.”
