University Of Ibadan, UI Suspends Student Union Activities

The University of Ibadan (UI) management has suspended all student union activities following a protest that resulted in a shutdown of the institution...

The university’s head of public relations, Olatunji Oladejo, confirmed the development on Tuesday.

“The Union Executive Council and Students Representatives Council have been suspended. All activities of the union and council have been suspended, too,” Mr. Oladejo confirmed.

He explained that the university’s management engaged with students over the weekend to discuss their grievances and that the vice chancellor called an emergency meeting of the university senate on Tuesday at noon.

“That meeting revealed all the issues that led to where we are; that is, postponement of the first semester examinations for the 2016/2017 academic session,” Mr. Oladejo said, adding that the university senate made the decision to suspend student union activities “until further notice” at the conclusion of the meeting.

It would be recalled that University of Ibadan students embarked on a protest demanding that the institution provide them with student identification cards, as promised months ago. Students also lamented the university management’s indifference to their welfare.

Responding to the protest, Vice Chancellor Olayinka Idowu, on Monday, announced the closure of the school and suspension of the semester’s examinations till July 17.

All undergraduate students are expected to leave the university campus today.
