
The three-day symposium for Northern Governors in Nigeria organized by the United States Government through the United States Institute of Peace has ended on Thursday night in Washington DC. On the final day, the Governors held series of discussions with current and former U.S. Public Officials including Amb. Robin Sanders, former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria. The Governors also had a panel discussion on ‘Nigeria Beyond Boko Haram” moderated by Aliyu Mustapha and Mariama Diallo, both of the Voice of America.
The panel on U.S. – Nigeria Business Conversation which had the participation of some investors in the United States xrayed opportunities and obstacles to productive investment in Northern Nigeria from the perspective of the investors and business owners.
Our correspondent reports that there was yet another panel on Leveraging Natural, Organizational, Financial and Human Resources to Prepare for Investment in Northern Nigeria. The panel analyzed relationship between violence and socio-economic development in northern Nigeria; identified how governors, Nigerian civic groups and private businesses and the international community can collectively attract productive investments (including small and medium enterprises) to generate sustainable employment and development in northern Nigeria.
The final panel was on Conflict Drivers and Sources of Resilience with a call for joint action. The panel identified actionable points from the symposium and external meetings that governors and members of the senior working group can leverage on to explore ways of addressing the numerous challenges of under-development in Northern Nigeria.
It would be recalled that the Governors were at the White House on Wednesday during which they met President Barack Obama’s National Security Advisor, Ambassador Susan Rice. The Governors also met the U.S Secretary of State, John Kerry and also met other senior government officials including the administrator of the United States Agency for International Development, USAID.
The symposium was attended by Governor Kashim Shettima who led the delegation as chairman of the Northern States Governors ’ Forum, Governors Darius Ishaku of Taraba, Dalong of Plateau, Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara, AbdulAziz Yari of Zamfara, Bindo Jibrilla of Adamawa, Muhammad Abdullahi Abubakar of Bauchi, Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger,Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto and Deputy Governor of Kano State, Professor Hafiz Abubakar who is representing Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State
