The recent public outcry over high cost of burial ceremonies in Anambra State was the bone of contention yesterday in Awka as some members of the public observed that dead bodies are abandoned in mortuaries due to lack of funds to foot the bills for high profile funeral ceremonies .....
Speaking to journalists on his position about expensiveburial ceremonies in the state, Deputy-Speaker and Chairman Anambra State House of Assembly Screening Committee Barr.Harford Ikechukwu Oseke said that it is indeed a worrisome situation in the sense that what obtains at burial ceremonies nowadays is a complete negation of what should be.
Oseke noted that corpses are abandoned in mortuaries for too long a time due to the fortune involved in performing burial rites.
He said people have converted burial ceremonies to business opportunities where they feed fat at the expense of the bereaved.
Although the lawmaker noted that the Muslim faithful do not place much premium on the dead as they do not undertake elaborate burial ceremonies but wondered why some people would embark on unnecessary luxuries just to bury the dead .
Oseke however sued for strict adherence to the law on control of burial activities in Anambra State when it is passed to regulate as well as curtail anomalies in funeral ceremonies.
For the chairman, Committee on Petitions and Conflict Resolution and member representing Idemili-South state constituency Barr. Chuka Ezewun , streets may soon be littered with corpses over lack of space for interment.
