Fu, who is famed for her frank sense of humour and hilarious facial expressions, was clearly in pain after the women's 4x100m medley relay. 

The swimmer was seen crouching down as her teammates were being interviewed, having just missed out on a medal and placing fourth.

When Fu was asked by a reporter from CCTV if her stomach hurt she first apologised to her teammates for her performance, before revealing she had her period.

'My period came last night and I'm really tired right now,' Fu said, according to Shanghaiist.'But this isn't an excuse, I still did not swim as well as I should have.'
