Baby Elephant Dies For Lack Of Treatment After Falling Into A Gutter. Photos

A baby elephant rescued from a drain has died in a transit home because the only vet was on leave.

The calf was dragged clear from an uncovered drain in Hambantota, Sri Lanka last month after falling in and breaking its leg.The critically-ill youngster was then driven away to a transit home for medical treatment.

But it has now died, the BBC reported, because the centre's only vet was on leave.

The animal's condition reportedly took a turn for the worse and with no vet available, workers at the transit home were unable to treat it. The calf died on Monday after another vet was called in to help, but it was too late to save the youngster.
