World Health Organisation, WHO, yesterday, said Nigeria was yet to be certified free from Polio virus and could record a fresh case any moment, saying “If proper measures are not taken by the governments.” ..
The organisation’s National Surveillance Officer, Dr. Clement Nwaeke issued the warning at the official presentation of the anti-polio animated movie/comic authored by Mr. Olugbenga Kuye in Lagos.
This warning came barely one year after the WHO announced Nigeria’s exclusion from polio endemic countries, thus leaving Pakistan and Afghanistan as the remaining countries where the virus was still endemic.
Nwaeke explained that the solution for Nigeria to maintain its current status and achieve more “is for the Federal Government and states to intensify their sensitisation campaign on the need for residents to immunize their children against the virus.”
He warned that the exclusion of Nigeria from the list of polio-endemic countries “does not translate to being free from the virus completely.
Nigeria can record another case of polio.” “Nigeria is in a critical stage now. Everyone must work to ensure that the country does not spread all over the country.
