3 die, 3 others injured in Ogun accident inferno

Apart from the three reported dead persons, three other persons were seriously injured in the accident that occurred at the Lotto Junction, Mowe, along the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway. An eye witness told Vanguard that a tanker laden with fuel travelling to Ibadan had run into a herd of cow Monday afternoon, killing four of them instantly, causing the truck to veer off its course as it spilled some of its content onto to the road.

It was gathered that the owner of the truck brought another tanker and transferred the product into it in preparation for onward movement to its final destination.

“Around 11pm, a vehicle, towing another vehicle without tyres and the rims having direct contact with the road, was passing by. It was the spark from the rims’ contact with the asphalted road that led to a spark which resulted into a huge fire that consumed the tanker, fire fighting truck and three persons. Three others were injured, including one of the fire fighters, who were keeping vigil to prevent fire outbreak at the scene.”

A source told our correspondent that three persons believed to be men of fire service from the Ogun State Fire Service to the scene were consumed by the fire. They were also said to have kept vigil at the scene, in order to prevent the fire outbreak while three others suffered various degree of burns. It was further learnt that one of those who survived, was one of the fire fighters who were keeping vigil at the scene.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the state’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the tragedy occurred around 11pm on Monday. He said, “Our men on ground at the scene said the fire incident occurred around 11pm.

“Though the fuel tanker had run into a herd of cow in the afternoon, around 3.30pm and spilled some of its content, as it veered off the road, the owners of the truck brought another tanker and transferred the product into it, and moved it to its destination.
