#crime : Suspected cultists attack Rivers communities, kill 16


At least 16 persons, including a police corporal, were killed on Thursday when gunmen suspected to be cultists stormed Ula Upata community in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State...


The group of unknown gunmen were said to have opened fire on innocent indigenes of the area, killing and injuring some of them in the process.

It was learnt that while the suspected cultists killed 10 in Ula Upata community, they moved to Ahoada West and killed six persons.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Frank, said he escaped into the bush from where he had a glimpse of what happened in Ula Upata community.

“I was in my room when about five boys started shooting. The killing started about 12.50am. I was in my house when I saw the killers. They were five persons. They carried three AK-47 and two pump action. I called the DPO and the JTF,” Frank said.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, who confirmed the incident, said a group of cultist were behind the attack.

Mohammad said, “the incident was more of cult related heinous activities at Ula Upata community, Ahoada East local government area. Eight persons were killed. Quick intervention by our men stop the situation from escalating.

“One of the suspected cultists was arrested and a pump action gun recovered from him.

He added that investigation is now ongoing.

However, the former Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Mr. Chibudum Nwuche, lamented the ugly incident and called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase to save the state from insecurity.
