7 People die, 17 injured in Ogun auto crash


No fewer than seven persons were confirmed dead, while 17 others were injured in an accident that happened on Monday at the Sagamu/Iperu Remo junction along Lagos-Benin Expressway...


The accident, our correspondent gathered, occurred around 2.50pm near the Police Area Commander’s Office at Sagamu. it involved a Toyota Hummer commercial bus with number plate BDG 789 XJ, which reportedly rammed into a Mazda commercial bus with number plate REE 248 XA.

An eye witness said the Toyota Hummer bus was suspected to be carrying passengers who were returning to Lagos from the Eastern part of the country after the Christmas and new year celebrations.

It was further gathered that the driver of the Toyota Hummer bus lost control, veering off its lane and then jumped over the median before crashing into the Mazda bus travelling in the opposite direction.

The Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Adegoke Adetunji, who confirmed the accident, said a total of 28 persons were involved in the auto crash and seven of them died, while 17 others were injured.

He said, “A total of 28 passengers were involved in the accident. While seven died, 17 others were injured and were in critical condition. The accident was caused by over-speeding.”

Adetunji also explained that those injured were taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, for medical attention, while corpses of those that died had also been deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.
