Family of slain UNIPORT student [Oghenekevwe Edah] demands N25m compensation

Oghenekevwe Edah

The family of Oghenekevwe Edah, a final year student of Engineering, University of Port Harcourt, who was killed by a police van driving against traffic, has demanded a N25m compensation from the police.

The victim’s father, Eyituoyo Edah, who also demanded the dismissal of the policemen, added that the police authorities must bear the burial costs of his son...

PUNCH Metro had reported that Oghenekevwe, was returning from church last week Sunday when he was knocked down at the Assemblies of God Church Junction, Alakahia area of Port Harcourt, by a police van driving against traffic. In a follow up, it was reported that the police, which earlier denied culpability, owned up and took responsibility for the death.

The policemen were reported to have been arrested and detained by the Rivers State Police Command, pending the conclusion of investigations.

Oghenekevwe’s father said, “We want justice. I am not interested in what they (police) are planning to do. They are are using delayed tactics, which is uncalled for. If those who are supposed to take care of us are the ones killing us, where do we turn to?

“The police should be responsible for everything my son was doing before he died and they have to bury him as well. We have also asked them to pay us a N25m compensation. Is it because of the money that they are running away? Is that money their money? Can it replace the life of my son?”

The UNIPORT Public Relations Officer, Dr. William Wodi, told our correspondent on Monday that the school authorities was on the case and would pursue it to the end.
