Women Arise for Change Initiative, yesterday, stormed the Ebute-Meta magistrates’ court in Lagos State, protesting the alleged killing of one Mrs Idongesit Ekpo and injuring her husband, Mr Godwin Ekpo, by a police corporal, Cpl. Musefun Aremu,,,
The group led by its leader, Mrs Joe Oki-Odumakin, displayed placards with inscriptions such as ‘Train our police to respect human rights’; ‘Women’s right is human rights’, ‘Time to upgrade the Nigeria Police’.
Addressing the protesters, Odumakin called for comprehensive medical treatment of Mr Godwin Ekpo, who was allegedly hit by a bullet fired by the corporal at Ijegun, near Lagos.
She said the police should be made to settle all the medical bills and also compensate Ekpo for the killing of his wife.
Odumakin said the deceased, still at the mortuary, should be given a befitting burial.
The nine-year-old daughter of the deceased, Blessing Godwin, recounted how her mother was allegedly gunned down by the Police on their way home from church on September 17.
A police corporal attached to Isheri-Oshun Division in Lagos, on September 17, fired a shot at a tricycle along the Isheri-Ijegun road, killing the wife of the operator on the spot.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, ordered immediate arrest of members of the team on duty on the night of the incident.
The killer policeman, Cpl. Musefun Aremu, has since been dismissed from service.
