A Gudu Upper Area Court in the Federal Capital Territory, on Thursday, sentenced a 24-year-old applicant, Monday Patrick, to six weeks imprisonment for stealing N5,000 tithe inside a church....
The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, however, gave Patrick an option of N6,000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crime.
Patrick, a resident of Aso in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, was convicted on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.
Prosecutor, John Ijagbemi, had told the court that one Ademola Adetuberu of Coza Church, Asokoro in the FCT, reported the matter at the Asokoro Police Station on November 24.
He said while the complainant was praying in the said church, the convict came in and stole an envelope containing the tithe from the altar.
Patrick pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.
Ijagbemi said during investigation, the money was recovered from Patrick.
The offence, the prosecutor said, contravened sections 348 and 288 of the Penal Code.
