It has always been wish and prayer of aged parents that their children grow up and bury them when they take their last breath, but how do people now pacify the family Pa Efijemue David, who lost his youngest son to wicked acts of Fulani herdsman snuffed life out him unexpectedly right in their presence.
Happy David, 33, was hale hearty on the fateful day, 28th July, 2015 and did not have any premonition of the cruel fate that awaited him as he set off for his farm that morning, that it was a one way journey to the great beyond........
Since that dark day, the family of Pa Efijemue and Madam Christiana David has been thrown into sorrow, tears and mourning following gruesome murder of their son who was pillar the family by a Fulani herdsman.
The deceased, who was stabbed by one Fulani, Usman Haruna, in presence of his father, mother, wife and four children at his farm in Emiworo along Lokoja -Ajaokuta road was rushed to hospital and later died at about 5.00 am on 30th July 2015, the following morning.
The untimely death of the young farmer was said to have been triggered by his directive to the herdsmen that farm had been sprayed with chemical and the Fulani should not to bring cows into the farm.
The angry Fulani reportedly stabbed him several times with a large dagger and the matter has continued to generate a lot of tension in Emiworo community in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Indeed, the entire youth had rose to protest the menace of Fulanis in the area and possible avenge his killing but peace has so far prevailed due to the intervention of the deceased’s elder brother, Joseph David, who appealed for calm so as not cause addition casualties in the area.
The David have continued to demand for justice over the untimely death of their son, father, husband and the bread winner of the family but little has been done in that direction.
Narrating the family ordeal, Pa. Efijemue David stated that his son, Happy David was on his piece of land uprooting cassava in anticipation to use the same piece of land for planting rice this season.
The 75 year old grandfather recalled that it was like a dream when the Fulani boy ran after Happy and stabbed him with knife in the back; he removed the knife and stabbed again till his intestine came out and then took to his heel and disappeared.
He pointed out that It was at this Juncture that the wife tied a rag around him to ensure the intestine did no exposed to air as he was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre but he was not attended to as a result of the doctors strike then and was quickly referred to the Kogi State Specialists Hospital.
Sunday Mirror gathered that against the backdrop of the advice that emergency surgery operation be carried out to safe Happy , the doctor, who attended to him at Tophill Clinic in Lokoja shifted the surgery operation till following morning. But unfortunately Happy gave up the ghost before the operation thereby terminating all the dreams of taking care of his aged parents, wife and six children he left behind.
The mother of deceased, Madam Christiana David stated she never had any the inkling that tragedy will befall the family and they will never see their bread winner again
She explained that she was on the farm with her son when she sighted Fulani boy coming towards them while Happy was working on the farm.
“Then Happy stopped what he was doing and told the Fulani boy to stop the cows from entering the farm because he had just sprayed the farm with powerful herbicide which could be harmful to cows.”
She further stated that as Happy turned back to continue his work, the angry fulani boy rushed towards him and stabbed him several times until intestine came out and his had to rags to tie the his abdomen before he was taken to the hospital by a good Samaritan.
She therefore demanded justice from the security agents, saying that the aggressor must not go unpunished and must tell the whole world why he had stabbed Happy who bleed to death at Tophill Clinic.
The wife of the deceased and mother of four, Mrs. Gladys David could not hold back tears, said that she had no inkling that her husband would die so soon, stressing that the last discussion with her husband was that after this planting season, he would no longer plant rice again to enable him concentrate on other farm produce.
She lamented on how to cope with five children without her husband, saying that she doesn’t know from where to start.
She described late husband as very hard working, gentle and the bread winner who was also taking care of his aged mother and father because others are civil servants.
The deceased’s immediate elder brother, Mr. Joseph David, who took up the matter explained that when he was told about the incident, he quickly rush to Ajaokuta Division Police Station to report the incident, adding that the suspect was arrested and later released on flimsy excuses
Joseph stated that following the release of the suspects by Ajaokuta Divisional Police Station, he had to petition the state police command to ensure justice is done in this case.
He pointed that he later went to C division in Lokoja and report the matter again and when arrest was to be effected the suspect, Usman Haruna pretended to be sick and was lying on bed at a clinic and was later picked up by the police in Lokoja.
Source hinted that the Divisional Crime office C Division had carried out investigation and subsequently referred the case the State Criminal Investigation Department CID for further investigation before the suspected murderer is charge to court to face wrath of law.
Findings also revealed that the Fulani herdsmen are becoming a serious threat who terrorised residents of the state, and were involved in kidnapping, armed robbery and killings,. Only recently a couple who wanted to buy land somewhere along Ajaokuta road were attacked, robbed of N970,000 and hacked with sword before there rescued by police.
The development, it was learnt has become a source worry for Kogi Police Command that has vowed to rid out all the criminal elements in the state.
