Confab report not against North and Northerners - Afenifere secretary

Chief Sehinde Arogbofa
The General Secretary of Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, Chief Sehinde Arogbofa has said that the report of the National Conference is not against the interest of the North.

Arogbofa spoke in Oka Akoko in the Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State in reaction to reports that some northern leaders had writer to President Muhammadu Buhari not to implement the confab report on the grounds that it is anti-North.

He said, “This Arewa people you are talking about, I don’t know about them but leaders from the north were present at the Confab; and in all the decisions we took at the confab and all the decisions that were taken by consensus, they were there unless maybe Arewa is now telling us that highly placed Nigerians like Alhaji (Ibrahim) Coomassie, Tanko Yakasai and some of their former governors too are not from the north.

“But they know that they are good Northern people; so, to say something different now is just the usual way in this country. Once they have a new government, people will start destroying and backing out from their initial decisions, which is not good.

“We took over 600 decisions on issues affecting this country and there was no single day we voted that we did not all agree. Do they want to tell me that somebody like the Lamido of Adamawa and the Emir of Ilorin are not northerners?

“I think it is Nigerians’ psyche that once a government is out of office we start destroying that government, we can’t move forward with this. I am not saying that all the decisions we took would be implemented but most of the decision are good for us and the government should go into them and accept that they are good.”

On the purported probe of the aides of former President Goodluck Jonathan by the Buhari administration, the Afenifere scribe said he supported the probe, warning however that “it should not be selective.”

“If somebody has stolen our money, let the President look into it because this is our money and we are suffering. Look at the allegation made by (Edo State Governor Adams) Oshiomhole that somebody made about $6bn, such a person should be probed and if found guilty jailed, and not only jailed but he should be shot. If Buhari is saying he wants to probe those found guilty of wrecking this nation, he should go ahead,” he said
