‘Stomach infrastructure’ brings 300 contacts everyday - Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, yesterday said he receives no fewer than 300 calls and text messages daily from people either commending him or seeking to participate in his novel policy ‘Stomach Infrastructure’.

The governor stated this in Ado-Ekiti at the opening of the 2015 annual conference and general meeting of the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria.

Speaking on the theme : “Strategies for Poverty Alleviation – the Imperative of Food Security”, he said he intentionally made his private and official telephone numbers available to the public, to draw the poor closer to governance and to make them have a sense of belonging.

“I make myself open and available to the poor people because of my belief that good governance starts from making yourself accessible and available to them.

“As a result of this as many as about 300 people in that category call or text me on daily basis for one thing or the other, and the joy of it is that they are happy that they have direct link with their governor without any influence.

“I will continue to do anything under my stomach infrastructure programme which is aimed at either giving fish or teaching people how to fish because some of them require as little as N5, 000 to move to the next level”, he said.

The governor said he was able to ingrain himself in the hearts of the people because he has had to taste poverty while growing up as a child. He said he deliberately introduced monthly radio/television announcement on the receipt of the federal allocations to carry the people along as far as state finances were concerned.

Fayose challenged the Institute to come up with strategies that would make life more meaningful to the Nigerian people, as reflected in the theme of the conference which he said was most appropriate.

In his remarks, the President/ Chairman of Council of the Institute, Prof. Oluwayemisi Obashoro-John, said the institute would live up to its name through constant advice and suggestions to all tiers of government.
