An unidentified woman on Monday dumped her two months old baby boy at a refuse site near LEA primary school at Old Kutunku village in Gwagwalada Area Council.
A resident of the area, Ayuba Michael, said the child was discovered by another woman, who went to dump refuse, adding that the woman ran back to inform the village head of the area.
He said the village head led some elders to pick the child, who was immediately handed over to the social welfare department of the council.
“The cry of the baby attracted the attention of the woman, who found him wrapped with a cloth very close to the refuse site. She ran back to inform the chief,’’ the resident explained.
Our reporter learnt that officials of the social welfare department of the council, who went with the child, reported the incident to the council chairman.
The council chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Jibrin Giri, who confirmed the incident to City News in a telephone conversation, said he has directed the police to carry out investigation in order to trace the mother of the child and that the child has been taken to motherless home in the area.
“This issue of dumping baby is becoming worrisome because not long ago, the same thing happened but I have directed the social welfare department to take the child to a motherless home, pending the outcome of the police investigation,’’ he said.
