Eighteen persons serving different jail terms, yesterday regained their freedom as the Katsina State governor, Aminu Bello Masari, granted them pardon.

The prisoners granted amnesty by the governor were serving between two to three-year jail terms without option of fine for various offences committed. They had at least six months left to complete their jail terms.

Masari, who was represented by the solicitor general and permanent secretary, ministry of justice,Barr Fatima Jibo, disclosed this when she visited the Katsina Central Prison.
She said the affected convicts were granted amnesty based on their good conduct which they exhibited while in the prisons.
The governor also paid the fine for 49 inmates also jailed for debt and theft.
Masari said he paid the fines worth over Ni million from his pocket as part of his personal effort to decongest the prison in fulfilment of pledge made during his recent visit to the prison.
The freed inmates were given N5,000 each to use as their transport fare back home to enable them re-unite with their families to celebrate the Eid-el-Fitr festival.
