The Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, and Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, have been adjudged best performing airport among the airports managed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Spokesman of FAAN, Yakubu Dati said the award was based on the Performance Management System (PMS) rating recently concluded by the Authority's Department of Planning. The PMS rating is an initiative for the Authority to measure, monitor and improve airport management and service quality through the assessment of each airport with the aim of improving travellers' experience.
The award, which was presented by the Managing Director of FAAN, Saleh Dunoma at a recent event, was given in the category of Best Performing Domestic Airport for Calabar, and Best Performing International Airport for Kano. The awards were received by respective managers, Alhaji Mohammed Sanni (Calabar) and Alhaji Gambo Aboki (Kano).
Margaret Ekpo International Airport Calabar emerged the Best Domestic Airport for the first quarter while Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport emerged as Best International Airport in the country. Also, the Security Directorate of the Authority was given the Exemplary Performance Award for its role during the recently concluded ICAO Security Audit.
The second award was initiated by the Authority to encourage hard work and diligence among staff of FAAN in the discharge of their duties of providing safe and secure airports, improving and standardising airport operations, instituting minimum customer service standard, and transforming our airports into viable commercial and tourist centres, and customer friendly.
Meanwhile, in a bold move to improve the revenue base of airports for greater productivity, Dunoma has established a special task force on revenue enhancement. The task force would be headed by the Managing Director himself.
Dunoma made this known in Lagos at a meeting with Regional and Airports Managers where he urged them to recover revenue at the point of collection as and when due, with applying sanctions where necessary.
The airport managers were also mandated to step up efforts in recovering debts and initiating non-aeronautical revenue streams in order to meet up with revenue targets based on the Authority’s 2015 approved budget.
During the meeting, which was attended by the top management of the Authority, the Managing Director reiterated the Authority’s commitment to delivering services at international standards of quality, in line with its mission statement.
Speaking further, the Managing Director charged the Managers to promote a healthy working relationship between the Authority’s Aviation Security Services and other government agencies at the airports, to discourage misunderstandings between various agencies at our airports.
