Akiolu calls for health coverage of Nigerians

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has appealed to government at all levels to ensure that Nigerians enjoy universal health coverage, as provided for under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

He said this would make quality health care accessible and affordable for the citizens.

Akiolu made the appeal in Lagos at the unveiling of the new Universal Anaesthesia Machine, which physicians use for the delivery of safe anaesthesia in hospitals.

The $35,000 machine was introduced to Nigeria by the Gradian Health Systems – an organisation that equips hospitals around the world to deliver anaesthesia safely and economically.
The monarch said his immediate plan for Lagos State was to ensure that at least 10 new comprehensive primary health care centres were provided in disadvantaged areas through the private sector initiative, in order to make health care easily accessible to residents of the state.

The monarch decried the state of health care in the country, noting that poor people were constantly at a disadvantage.
He said, “With proper integration of the National Health Insurance Scheme, I believe that more people will benefit from quality health service at affordable cost.”
He promised to drive the community participation of Lagosians in universal health insurance coverage, saying it was the only way health care could go round everybody in the country.

Speaking on the state of the health systems in Nigeria, Consultant Anaesthetist and Head of Anaesthesia Department, Military Hospital, Lagos, Dr. Ifeoma Egbunike, said the present level of health care in the country was poor.

Egbunike said, “The government must be pragmatic about the revival of the health sector before the system grounds to a halt.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Gradian Health Systems, Stephen Rudy, described the features of the new machine as “very appropriate for the Nigerian environment.”
