A man from Ututu in Nigeria has been arrested for allegedly duping a woman with marriage proposals on a popular matchmaking site, the police said on Saturday.
Henry Chima, who posed as U.K. citizen, would befriend women and then dupe them of large sums of money for “transportation charges of expensive gifts from the U.K.”, said a senior officer.
On April 17, a Turkman Gate resident told Chandni Mahal police that she was contacted by Alex Ramsey in March via Shaadi.com. He told her he lived in London and worked with WHO. Alex later told her he had sent her expensive gifts via courier and even gave her a tracking number. On April 11, she received a call from a woman allegedly working with the Mumbai Customs Department, who asked her to pay Rs.37,000 to clear the parcel. Alex advised her to deposit the amount. The next day, she was asked to deposit Rs.86,000 more .
“She got suspicious and asked the woman for her office address and landline number. The woman disconnected the call immediately. When she told Alex, he told her to deposit the money,” the officer said.
When she refused, he threatened to post her fake photographs on social sites. She immediately filed a case. Probe revealed Alex changed his residence and mobile number frequently.
The money deposited by her in the account suggested by Alex had been opened using forged documents. Alex was soon traced to Safdarjung Enclave and arrested on July 3. His involvement in other such cases is under investigation.
