The Nigeria Maritime University will start academic activities in September, Professor (Mrs.) Ongoebi Maureen O. Etebu, who is the vice-chancellor of the school, has publicized.
The university was an initiative of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
Prof. Otebu, who stated this during her first visit to both permanent and temporary sites of the university, said the decision to commence academic activities in September 2015 was reached at the school's council meeting.
She added that the academic board of the university remained committed to the task of building human capacity for the Nigerian maritime sector.
She said: "We remain committed to the mandate given to us. We are also aware of the enormous task ahead, but we will not be distracted by it. This university, which is the first of its kind, will help bridge the gap in the nation's maritime sector presently dominated by foreigners."
Earlier, the Director-General of the NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi, commended the federal government for establishing the institution to train manpower for the maritime industry.
"The university is now set to commence academic activities at its fully developed temporary site in Kurutie, in Warri South-west Local Government Area," he added.
