The Vice President (South West) of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Mr. Jelili Obisesan, on Monday barely escaped being beaten by irate members of the union in Osun State over the strike embarked upon by the union since January.
The incident occurred at the premises of the Osun State High Court where members of the union gathered to deliberate on the strike.
The chairman of JUSUN in the state, Mr. Dapo Oseni, had announced the suspension of the strike but he said his members would not return to work because of the ongoing strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress, to which the union belonged.
Obisesan, who was billed to address the workers after Oseni, angered the judicial workers by threatening to leave the venue if they refused to be orderly in their conduct.
Irked by Obisesan’s comment, some of the workers started shouting that he should leave the venue. Some of the workers threatened to beat him with charms if he refused to “behave himself.”
The NLC chairman in the state, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, however pacified the irate JUSUN members and begged them to allow Obisesan to address them because he had been working round the clock on behalf of the union.
Obisesan returned to address the workers but an argument again ensued between him and a union member with the member raising his hand to slap the vice president. The angry member was however prevented by some executives of the union in the state.
At this point, other officials of the union had to lead Obisesan away from the meeting and the NLC chairman in the state addressed the judiciary workers.
