Despite the law mandating life imprisonment for rapists, it seems the crime is growing at an alarming rate in Nigeria.
Four young men, Lekan Jimoh, 25, Tunde Ajayi, 20, Taiwo Awoniyi, 23, (No relative of U-20 striker) and Ojo Olayisoye, 18, will be blaming their rascally behaviour in gang-raping a 16-year-old girl, as they have been remanded in prison custody by Yaba Magistrates Court sitting in Lagos.
According to the police prosecutor in the case, ASP Godwin Anyanwu, the accused persons committed the sordid offence on June 12 at Egan-Igando, a suburb of the state.
Anyanwu narrated how the men connived among themselves to carry out the act:
“The girl was on an errand and on her way, one of the accused, Jimoh, who usually disturbs her, stopped her and attacked her with the other three accused persons.
Jimoh conspired with the other three accused persons to defilethe 16-year-old girl. The accused persons covered her eyes with a cloth and carried her to a room.”
The court also heard that the accused threatened to stab the girl with a knife if she refused to let them have their way with her.
Chief Magistrate A.O Soladoye, ordered that they be remanded in prison custody while adjourning the case till August 3.
