The Students Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, has accused the Osun State Police Command of hiding the driver of a private school bus which crushed a 200 level law student of the university to death.
Mary Ibitolu was knocked down from a motorcycle and crushed to death on May 6 by the driver of a school bus whose vehicle was faulty.
The Vice President-elect of the OAU Students’ Union, Miss. Opeyemi Oladnjoye, spoke with journalists during a candle light procession held in honour of the deceased in Osogbo on Tuesday night.
Old students of Our Lady and Saint Francis Catholic College Osogbo, which the deceased attended, organised the procession in collaboration with OAU students.
She said, “We are not satisfied with the response of the Police Public Relations Officer concerning the whereabouts of the driver.
“The police seem to be hiding something from us as regards the school bus driver that killed our Motunrayo. The PPRO refused to tell us plainly whether the driver was arrested, where he is being kept and when prosecution would commence.”
She said the SUG would do everything to ensure justice in the case.
The OAU President-elect, Mr. Kayode Omotayo, in a tribute circulated at the event, paid a glowing tribute to the deceased just like many others.
Omotayo blamed the government and the hospital which he alleged did not attend to the deceased on time for her death.
He said, “The Great Ife union believes that the inept of the government both at the state and federal level have continued to hunt the innocent Nigerian students.
“We discovered that the late Miss. Mary Motunrayo Ibitolu, who was an emblem of beauty and brilliance, after her accident was not quickly attended to by medical personnel; the vehicle that hit her was not, by any standard of traffic regulations, supposed to be on the road.
“However, we have come to the reality that she is no more with us. The Great Ife community continues to mourn Miss Mary Motunrayo Ibitolu who will forever remain in our heart.”
Efforts to speak to the PPRO, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, were unsuccessful due to network problem but the text message sent to her which indicated it was delivered was not responded to.
