UNKNOWN people suspected to be kidnappers have threatened to abduct a senior member of the medical profession in Ekiti State, Dr Bayo Orire, who runs a hospital in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.
Orire, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, said the number through which the threat was sent was 233269355880.
“You are the next in line! We go know if the police, army and other security forces can protect you and your hospital in this state. We shall see,” the text message read.
According to Orire, who is the publicity secretary of Ekiti APC Elders’ Forum, the threat was sent to his mobile phone on Tuesday.
He said he lodged a complaint with the state Commissioner of Police, Ebojune Ibine, on Wednesday.
The kidnappers also threatened to abduct seven other medical doctors, in a threat message sent to their phones on Tuesday.
In a related development, a socio-political pressure group, Ekiti Redemption Group (ERG), has called on security agencies in the state to redouble their efforts to stem the tide of kidnapping in the state.
Coordinator of the group, Morakinyo Ogele, who condemned the spate of kidnappings in the state in the last two weeks, said the police, Department of State Services (DSS) and other sister agencies must collaborate and tighten the noose on kidnappers, to free those still held hostage in their camp.
“I am calling on the Commissioner of Police, Director of DSS and other security chiefs to intensify effort to stop the latest trend of kidnapping in Ekiti.
“This has reached a disturbing proportion and the life of the good people of the state must be saved from these criminals.
“We urge them to do everything possible to free the victims still being held by the kidnappers. They must work harder on their intelligence gathering mechanism to trace the whereabouts of the kidnappers and free the hostages in their custody, for them to be reunited with their families,” he said.
At least two persons had been killed and seven individuals abducted in four kidnapping incidents in the state.
