Ekiti health workers protest #ekiti #kidnap #kidnapping

Dealth workers in Ekiti State yesterday protested the kidnapping of some of their colleagues.

Acting under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and Medical and Health Workers Union ( MHWU), they marched on the Governor’s Office, demanding the release of their colleagues.

The State Chairman of MHWU, Raymond Ade-Adesanmi, said members of the union could not perform their duties for fear of being kidnapped.

Ade-Adesanmi, who is also the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said if the trend continued, the health workers would be forced to embark on an industrial action.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, such as “Kidnapping is alien to Ekiti people” and “Ekiti health workers say no to Kidnapping”, among others.

The Head of Service (HoS), Dr. Gbenga Faseluka, who received the protesters, pleaded with them not to embark on any strike.

Faseluka described the strike threat as panicky, unprofessional, and counter-productive.

He regretted that most of the victims were public servants from the academia and health sectors.

The HoS said the government was working to ensuring the safe release of the victims.

Faseluka said since preliminary investigations revealed that none of the abductees was kidnapped from the workplace, it may be hasty to conclude that particular professions were being targeted.

Faseluka added: “ Governor Ayodele Fayose has been working hard to ensure adequate security in the state, especially by instituting a Security Trust Fund.

“Logistics had been provided for joint security for the military, police and other security agencies.”

He said the governor was out of the state to secure more commitments from the Federal Government.

The HoS said a special security squad deployed to the state has arrived.

“I urge public servants to go about their duties without fear.”
