Real Madrid interest made us act on Gaya, says Valencia chief

Valencia are desperate to make a statement toward Real Madrid by tying down Jose Gaya to a new deal irrespective of the capital club's interest.
The 19-year-old has caught the attention of the Champions League holders with his fine performances in 2014-15 and Madrid are allegedly keen to bring the youngster to the Santiago Bernabeu come the end of the season.
However, Valencia president Amadeo Salvo is confident the left-back will snub a move to Madrid in favour of a contract renewal with his current club.
"When Real Madrid knock on your door every day with the same story it’s time to set a marker," Salvo was quoted as saying by AS.
"We’re making a huge effort with Gaya because we feel he’s worth it. He’s a player with a fantastic future.
"Both sides are happy and want to reach an agreement. Gaya is a great lad and we’re keen for him to stay, but a negotiation of this nature is not a simple process."
The Spain Under-21 left-back came through the ranks of the Valencia youth academy and made his official first-team debut in October 2012.
Gaya has developed into a first-team regular in 2014-15 following the departure of Juan Bernat to Bayern Munich ahead of this season.
The youngster's existing contract with Valencia runs until June 2018.
