The Handball Federation of Nigeria says the selection of players for the Brazzaville 2015 All Africa Games qualifiers will be based on performances in camp, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
HFN Secretary Elijah Ameh said the national senior men and women’s teams would participate in the African qualifiers to take place in Niamey, Niger Republic from March 10 to 18.
Ameh said 23 male and 23 female players had been training in Abuja ahead of the competition. But he said 15 players in each category would make the squads for the competition.
The Secretary said, “The qualifiers are very important to us. We are not going to select players on past performances or previous records; there are criteria that must be met.
“We are preparing seriously for the competition and that is the reason we invited them to camp in January in spite of some challenges as we don’t want to take chances.
“The technical officials have been able to screen the 30 players in each category initially invited for camping to 23 each.
‘This is the number of players that are in camp now.”
Ameh said the invited players ply their trade in the domestic league, adding that “we decided to use the players here because they are available and ready”.
He said eight countries were grouped in Zone 3 and that they would feature at the qualifiers to pick a ticket to participate at the All Africa Games in Brazaville, Congo from September 4 to 19.
The countries are Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Ivory Coast, Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger Republic and Sierra Leone.
