An Unapologetic Argument for Abortion Rights

In a political environment where the Right is waging an all-out war on women’s choice, the pro-choice movement has, of late, been rather weak on the defense. So let’s set some things straight:
1 out of 4 pregnancies in a healthy woman of reproductive age ends in spontaneous miscarriage. The majority of miscarriages happen within the first 7 or 8 weeks of pregnancy, many women don’t actually realize they were pregnant to begin with.
Roughly 50% of all fertilizations never properly implant in the uterine lining, and are instead shed along with the regular menstrual flow.
Do you have a funeral procession for every menstrual cycle that doesn’t result in a viable pregnancy? Why not? That could have been a zygote that just died. The ending of a potential human life! Why aren’t you in mourning?! Don’t you care that a human life might have just ended?! (Could it potentially be because you don’t actually confer the same personhood and “beingness” rights to the “potential” for life that you do to established life?)
Well, I don’t. Actually. “Life” may be defined any number of ways, but human life actually has some rather unique qualities. To that effect, a blastocyst is not a human being, no matter how much you keep insisting that it is.
On the other hand, my life is pretty clearly and unequivocally a fact, not a mere potentiality (at least until I kick the bucket.) On the other hand, the existence of a future life is dependent on the use of my body as a means to an end so that it might become a new human. I am (not) sorry, but my established rights do not get superseded by a “potential” “future” person. A flu virus could potentially mutate into a sustainable life-form, but I don’t feel any guilt over my immune system kicking the flu’s butt when I’m sick.
I refuse to agree with the belief that my purpose in life is as a vessel for reproducing—My body is my own, and I adamantly refuse to lease it to society for the manufacture of more humans. The answer is no, you can’t have it. If you were really pro-life, you would respect the life and wishes of the actual, breathing human being in front of you able to speak and say, “hey I don’t want to have babies.”
I am totally “pro-life.” I’m Pro-The-Lives-Of-People-Already-In-Existence.
