Defending champions Nigeria Customs Service on Monday came from behind to defeat Dominion Divine Freight Forwarders 2-1 in the opening game of the 6th Ships and Ports Soccer Challenge – tagged 2014 Maritime Cup – played at the National Stadium, Lagos.
Customs have won the last three editions of the football event, which has 12 teams competing for honours in this year’s edition.
Dominion opened scoring when Obinna Nwankwo converted a 19th minute penalty but the defending champions drew level through Abubakar Mikail in the 37th minute. Customs’ Tenyon Yenne grabbed the winner in the 82nd minute of the match.
The winners of the competition sponsored by Micura Stevedoring Services will go home with N500,000, while the second and third-placed teams will get N300,000 and N200,000 respectively.
CEO Ships and Ports Communication Company, Bolaji Akinola, said the event was meant to foster unity amongst workers in the maritime industry.
