Delta State have emerged winners of the Karate Federation of Nigeria President National Karate Championship held between March 26 and 30 at the Ilorin Township Stadium, Kwara State.
Team Delta raked in four gold, five silver and five bronze medals to win the meet, while Lagos State garnered three gold, two silver and three bronze medals to emerge second. Cross River State finished third having won three gold and two silver medals.
Adong Bassey of Cross River emerged as the most outstanding athlete of the competition.
The 18-year-old competed in the men’s -60kg category and won gold for his state at the competition.
KFN vice president, Emmanuel Metu, said Bassey had been given the award because he was identified as a talent that the country could harness in the nearest future.
He added that all the medal winners would be in the national karate squad from where athletes would be selected for competitions.
He said, “There will still be more competitions this year, but those who won medals in Ilorin will be in the national team so that when we have international competitions, we just call on the needed ones and train them for the event.”
