Gideon Patrick, 7, a student of Atimbo Primary School in Calabar Municipal Council Area of Cross River State was on Wednesday crushed by an empty truck while returning from school.
The driver of the truck lost control as it was descending the Atimbo hill. The truck rammed into a nearby building where it knocked down two other school pupils who were playing inside the compound.
The duo, David Onoyom and Daniel Emmanuel Ekanem, became unconscious and were rushed to the hospital.
An eye witness said the truck with registration number XA780TA belonging to EDANNOK Nigeria Ltd had a brake failure while descending the hill, which is on the outskirts of Calabar metropolis.
The development forced the driver to swerve from left to right only to end up at the building opposite the Nigerian Navy Barrack.
The landlady of the house, Mrs. Emilia Efa, was not indoors when the accident took place as she was said to have travelled out of Calabar but her son, Daniel, said he was informed of the incident on phone by his sister hence he rushed home, adding “I can’t understand why this has happened to us’’.
He described the other two children who were involved in the accident as neighbours and blamed the driver for not being careful enough as his reckless driving might have been responsible for the accident.
The parents of the deceased were not at home when the accident happened but one of his brothers who witnessed everything wondered why such a tragedy should befall the family. He sobbed uncontrollably.
Another eye witness revealed that the driver of the truck has been arrested by naval officers. The witness said the driver as he lost control, was shouting “brake failure, brake failure” as the vehicle swerved down the hill before crushing Gideon who had closed from school before ending up in the building.
A substantial part of the building was destroyed. Doctors are currently battling to save the lives of the two other students who were knocked into a state of unconsciousness.
Shortly after, a Police team led by the State Traffic Commander, Mr. Ojo Joseph, arrived at the scene to maintain law and order as a mob was about to lynch the driver and his conductor before the intervention of the naval personnel.
