A light assault rifle with three magazines containing 60 rounds of live ammunition and a bayonet belonging to a gang of killers have been recovered by the police in Enugu.
Southern City News learnt that the police retrieved the arms from a forest in Ehamufu, Isiuzo Local Government Area of Enugu, where they were buried in a forest.
Spokesman of the Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, disclosed that the recovery of the arms followed intelligence obtained by operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
One Chibuike Odo from Ehamufu, one of the suspected members of the said killer gang, which had its hideout in the forest, was apprehended during the operation by the FSARS operatives.
However, the leader of the gang, simply identified as Emma, is currently at large, having escaped when the FSARS operatives swooped on the hideout.
Amaraizu said the gang had killed a number of persons in Ehamufu area.
“The two-man gang of gunmen comprises Chibuike Odo from Mgbuji, Ehamufu, and Emma from Amede, Ehamufu, in Isiuzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.
“Emma, the leader of the gang, was recently released from prison but he is at large now.
“The notorious gang became a thorn in the flesh of residents of Ehamufu when they started killing people in the forest. They killed one Militus Ede and another person inside Ehamufu forest in June 2018.
“Following a directive by the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Danmallam Mohammed, one of the suspects, Chibuike Odo, was nabbed through a tip-off by the operatives of the FSARS, Enugu State Police Command, while a manhunt has been launched for the fleeing leader of the gang (Emma),” the police spokesman said.
The arrested suspect, Odo, a primary school dropout, disclosed that he was a tailor before he teamed up with Emma to form the killer gang.
He claimed that he did not know what led him to venture into crime, but blamed the development on ‘Satan’, even as he added that all the recovered weapons belonged to Emma.
Amaraizu said the police had commenced investigation into the matter and maintained that the suspect would be charged to court on the completion of the investigation.
