The Acting Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, accompanied senators in the committee on the NDDC who visited Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital, on a visit to Rivers governor Nyesom Wike on Wednesday....
Her visit was immediately interpreted by some APC supporters as a sellout of her party.
The APC is on a war path with Gov. Wike of the PDP. By virtue of her former position as commissioner of information in Rivers state and one of the closest ally of the Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor, Semenitari has often found herself at the centre of the PDP-APC clashes. Shortly after Wike became governor, officials of the Rivers government stormed Semenitari's house in her absence and impounded her car, which she claimed she was entitled to by law.
Reacting to claims that she compromised her loyalty by visiting the governor, Semenitari said the allegation is "juvenile". Speaking through her media aide, Mr Bekee Anyalewechi, the NDDC MD said that it was unfortunate that some persons could give such interpretation to a genuine, open and official assignment she undertook to the Government House, adding that she only performed a role as chief host to the lawmakers who were on a visit to the state.
According to her, protocol demanded that the lawmakers visited the governor, adding that as a good chief host, it was proper she led them to the governor.
Anyalewechi said: "As per the claim that Semenitari's presence at Government House compromised her cordial membership of APC, it is tantamount to saying that because Governor Wike held his recent thanksgiving service in a church, he has become a cleric.
"We state categorically that Semenitari remains a chieftain and loyal member of APC. By her current official portfolio, she is the mother of the nine focal states of NDDC. She understands the delineation between partisan politics and public service."
