Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Rivers State chapter, Mrs Beatrice Itubo, narrowly escaped death as as some men, suspected to be assassins, invaded her residence, in the early hours of Friday...
The suspected gunmen, numbering five, were said to have, at about 3:30am, broken into the home of the labour union leader in Rumuagholu Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
Armed with all kinds of dangerous weapons, it was also gathered that the hoodlums shot at her gate, damaged some of the windows before gaining access into her bed room.
Tribune learnt that young man in the house, who led the assassin to the bedroom where Itubo and her husband were sleeping, suddenly gained courage and held on to the suspect's rifle.
The boldness of the young man, it was said, further emboldened other members of the family who pounced on the suspect, beating him with soft weapons until he became weak, while one his colleague, who had also entered the room, took to his heels.
"We were just sleeping when suddenly we started hearing noise on one of our windows. The next thing we saw was some young men with gun. About two of them came into the room. They brought all of us to the parlour and asked us to lie down.
"They asked one of our brothers to lead them to the bedroom where our aunty is. We start pleading.
They did not request for money if they were armed robbers. My brother led them to the bedroom where our aunty was.
"It is only God that saved her because she saw her death. When we overpowered the first one that was holding a gun, his colleague took off. One of the Rivers NLC chairperson said.
Confirming the incident, Mrs Itubo said the the suspected assassins attempted to kill her but it only took the intervention of her younger brother and other neighbours who she put a call through to that enabled them to apprehend one of the suspects.
She suspected that the attempted assassination would have been prompted by the power tussle in the state NLC, but expressed confidence that the security agency would carry out proper investigations to unmask the perpetrators.
"It is God that saved me. I was sleeping when I heard a knock on the door. The next thing I heard was my brother telling me to open the door. Because it was his voice, I opened
"Immediately a young man with gun entered, pointed his gun at me and told me that he is after my life and not money. But God saved me. We over powered him", she said
