Magistrates’ Court remands Arabic pupil "Sodiq Isa" for killing neighbour "Adeboye Johnson"

An Ebute-Meta Magistrates’ Court has remanded a 19-year-old teenager, Sodiq Isa, for allegedly killing his neighbour, Adeboye Johnson, 26.

The magistrate, N.A. Layeni, said the defendant should be remanded for the first 30 days permitted by law pending the release of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions...

PUNCH Metro had reported that Isa was returning from an Arabic class when his food plate fell on the ground and while cleaning it, the deceased cautioned him.

Johnson was said to have complained that Isa was making a noise with the plate.

Isa, who ignored the warning and continued what he was doing, was allegedly beaten by the victim who described his action as rude.

The teenager was alleged to have carried a stick with which he struck the victim in the head, thereby killing him.

Policemen from the Amukoko division arrested Isa and the matter was transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.

He was arraigned on one count of murder.

The charge read, “That you, Sodiq Isa, on December 5, 2015, at about 8.30am on Olorungbebe Street, Amukoko, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Adeboye Johnson, aged 26, by hitting him with a plank on the head, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”

The defendant’s plea was not taken.

The police prosecutor, Kukoye Olusegun, applied for his remand in prison, telling the court that the defendant had confessed to the crime and was identified by witnesses.

“We want him remanded pursuant to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justcie Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. The remand is to enable the police to obtain legal advice from the DPP,” he added.

The defence counsel, Spurgeon Ataene, did not object to the application.

The magistrate thereafter ordered that Isa be remanded pending the DPP’s advice.

The case was adjourned till January 25, 2016.
