The Imo State House Assembly on Wednesday denied any plot to impeach the Speaker, Dr Benjamin Uwajumogu.
The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Dr Acho Ihim, told newsmen in Owerri that the claims were “false, malicious and unfounded”.
He said the speaker had not contravened any law to warrant his impeachment.
Ihim accused some politicians and a section of the media of spreading the rumour to “witch-hunt and tarnish the image of the House”.
“It should be noted that the impeachment speculations only exist in the wildest and skewed imaginations of their sponsors.
“The Speaker, being one of the custodians of our country’s laws has not in any form contravened any law to warrant his impeachment,” he said.
The House spokesman alleged that the rumours were part of plans to cause crisis in the state ahead of the 2015 election.
“The rumours were orchestrated with a view to heat up the polity and run down the government of the day for their inordinate political ends,” he said.
Ihim said the speaker had brought about significant progress since he took over the leadership of the legislature.
The chairman said the house remained united and would continue to discharge its constitutional role to ensure the protection of the socioeconomic well being of the people.
